10 Tips for Starting a Home-Based Food Business : Managing ...

If you have gotten countless compliments on your cupcakes or find yourself with requests from your friends to be their personal chef for special occasions, a home-based food business might be a great way to earn extra money while doing something you enjoy. But even though frosting cakes or bottling your homemade barbecue sauce may seem more fun than work, a home-based food business is still a business. As with any business, you need to plan and research before picking up your mixer or designing labels for your salad dressing.

Here are 10 things you should know before opening a home-based food business:

1. Learn the regulations and requirements for your state and county. Your first step is to determine the rules for a home-based food business in your area. Some states, such as California, have a law that allows home-based food businesses meeting certain criteria to bypass being certified as a commercial kitchen.

?There are state and local requirements for running a business out of the home, especially if it is a food business, including zoning, business licensing and permitting, and in the food context also production and safety requirements depending on the product,? says John Gerber, lawyer with Upstart Legal. ?Failure to do this correctly will jeopardize the company?s ability to produce and sell product.?

2. There has to be a market for your business to be successful. You could have the best cupcakes on the planet or the tastiest dry rub ever invented, but if there is not a market for your product, then you will not be able to make revenue on your product. Chef Veronica Rains, co-owner of Wholesome Chow and author of Sell Your Organic Food Product recommends doing focus groups, making small batches with inexpensive packaging and selling your products to a few retail locations before fully investing in the business.

3. You should conduct your business as a legal entity. Since home-based food businesses often are built out of a hobby, many entrepreneurs in the industry make the mistake of continuing to run their business in a casual way. ?Whether as an LLC or corporation, the business owner should form an entity and operate the business as that company, as opposed to themselves individually,? Gerber says. ?The legal entity, if properly managed, will keep the liabilities of the company separate from the assets of the individual owners.? He also recommends carrying insurance, keeping business accounts separate from personal accounts and registering all products as trademarks in the company name.

4. Hire professionals when needed. While you may have designed a website for your homeowners association or taken a class in college on accounting, carefully consider hiring professionals for tasks that are outside of your realm of expertise. Although you could do these tasks, your time can often be better spent growing the business, and the result is usually of higher quality by bringing in professionals.?

5. Put everything in writing. To protect yourself and your company in the future, you need to put all relationships and work-for-hire provisions in writing. This is also especially true if friends and family have helped with the capital investment to get your business off the ground.

?If people other than the owner of the business are involved in creating or preparation of the product, the company needs to have them assign to the company any ownership rights they may have in their work,? Gerber says. He also says that provisions should be in place for vendors including website designers.

6. Having a professional image goes a long way. Even if you bake your goods wearing your pajamas while your children do homework in the next room, you want to look like a established and polished company. Take the time to have a professional looking website, brochure and business cards. Be sure that all of your product packaging reflects the image of your company and is professional.

7. Your phone will not just magically ring with orders. Many food-based entrepreneurs assume that since everyone loves their products, that people will be clamoring to buy it. Steve Brodsky, owner of personal chef company 3 Star Chefs says that's the biggest mistake he sees home-based food businesses making. It's vital to spread the word about your business. ?My suggestion would be to put as much money as you can afford into marketing/PR/advertising right out of the gate,? Brodsky says.

8. Pricing can mean the difference between success and failure. Spend time researching comparable products and determining your costs before setting prices. When Myriah Zaytoun, home-based food business owner, first started out she would price her products based on her ingredient costs, but would not include her time into the price and quickly realized that not all cooking jobs are created equal. ?You cannot make a profit if you charge $20 for a baking job that takes you four hours to complete, on top of the price of ingredients. However, if you price things too high, you risk alienating your customer-base. I have learned to carefully weigh out all factors before pricing any baking job.?

Chris Henry, owner of personal chef service Fresh! also cautions against pricing too low and says that it could set a precedent that is hard to break. You might get clients, but you won't make a reasonable profit, which can can be frustrating and make you feel as though you've wasted your time, Henry says.

9. Realize that your materials price will fluctuate. Prices for the items that you will use on a daily basis, such as flour, butter and eggs, are not static and will change based on events in the economy and industry. ?It is important that when you price out your products, that you (leave) room for the prices to fluctuate so you can weather the increases and just revisit it on a semiannual basis,? says Kelly Delaney, pastry chef and operator of Cakes for Occasions.

10. Buying in bulk can save considerable money. When Delaney was first starting out, she was trying to save money on expenses and would only buy the items that she needed for the week?s orders. But she quickly realized that while the financial outlay was more up front, that she saved considerable money by planning ahead and buying common items in bulk. ?When you purchase ahead, in bulk, you save in the future,? Delaney says.

Taliban leader says insider attacks will increase

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? Taliban insurgents will increase the number of insider attacks against coalition and Afghan forces, which have resulted in the deaths of at least 52 foreign troops so far this year, the movement's reclusive leader said Wednesday.

In an emailed statement congratulating Muslims as they prepare to celebrate the Eid al-Adha holiday, Mullah Mohammad Omar urged "every brave Afghan in the ranks of the foreign forces and their Afghan hirelings ... to strike them."

"Jihadist activities inside the circle of the state militias are the most effective stratagem. Its dimension will see further expansion, organization and efficiency," he said. "Increase your efforts to expand the area of infiltration in the ranks of the enemy."

Also Wednesday, NATO said in a statement that two of its soldiers died following an insurgent attack in southern Afghanistan. It did not provide further details about the attack or the nationality of the victims.

The surge in insider attacks is throwing doubt on the capability of the Afghan security forces to take over from international troops ahead of a planned handover to the Afghans in 2014. It has further undermined public support for the 11-year war in NATO countries.

The attacks have not been limited to members of the NATO-led international coalition. More than 50 Afghan members of the government's security forces also have died this in attacks by their own colleagues.

The Taliban leader also claimed his fighters were winning the war and vowed to continue the struggle "against the invaders who have invaded our country until the occupation ends completely."

"We told the enemy 11 years ago that their coming (to the country) will be easy but their presence and exit will be full of complications," he said.

Omar also exhorted his fighters to "pay full attention to the prevention of civilian casualties," saying the enemy was trying to blame them on the insurgents.

Last week the United Nations called on the Taliban leadership to stop the use of homemade roadside bombs and mines. The Taliban say they use only remote-controlled roadside bombs which ? unlike the mines automatically activated by pressure-plates ? allow a bomber to choose the time of the blast and specifically target coalition troops and their Afghan allies.

But the world body says that insurgent-placed homemade bombs, also known as improvised explosive devices or IEDs, continue to be the deadliest weapon for civilians. IEDs killed 340 civilians and injured a further 599 over the past nine months, an increase of almost 30 per cent compared to the same period last year, the UN said.

iPad mini made official by Apple alongside fourth generation iPad

iPad mini official Apple white and silver

Today Apple held its event in San Jose, and as anticipated, it took the wraps off of its new iPad mini. The iPad mini features a 7.9-inch 1024x768 display and measures in at 7.2mm thick. It comes two colors, either black with a slate rear or white with a silver rear, similar to the iPhone 5.?The iPad mini features a 7.9-inch 1024x768 display and measures in at 7.2mm thick. It comes two colors, either black with a slate rear or white with a silver rear, similar to the iPhone 5. Under the iPad mini's hood is a dual-core A5 processor, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and a battery that Apple says will last for 10 hours. Also included is a FaceTime HD camera on its face and a 5-megapixel iSight shooter on its backside.

When it comes to pricing and availability, the iPad mini starts at $329 for the 16GB Wi-Fi model, with 32GB and 64GB models available for $429 and $529, respectively. Versions with an LTE cellular connection that works with AT&T, Sprint and Verizon in the U.S. will also be available. Pricing for those models set at $459 for the 16GB version, $559 for the 32GB flavor and $659 for the 64GB model. Pre-orders for the iPad mini will kick off on Friday, October 26. Expect the Wi-Fi variants to launch on November 2, with the cellular-enabled models coming two weeks later.

Apple today also introduced the fourth generation iPad. The new version of the iPad features Apple's A6X processor, which the Cupertino firm says features double the graphics and CPU power of its predecessor. The fourth gen iPad features the same 9.7-inch 2048x1537 Retina display as the third generation model, and Apple claims that it'll get the same 10 hours of battery life as well. Another difference between the two models is the front-facing camera, as Apple has opted to include a FaceTime HD camera on the fourth generation iPad.?

The fourth generation iPad will come in black and white versions, just like the previous model, with pricing set at $499 for the 16GB variant, $599 for the 32GB version and $699 for the 64GB flavor. Like the iPad mini, the Wi-Fi iPad will be available starting on November 2. There will also be LTE-capable models available, and this time around Sprint is also getting in on the fun. The fourth gen iPad will feature support for LTE on AT&T, Sprint and Verizon here in the U.S., and it'll be available a couple of weeks after the Wi-Fi variant. When it comes to pricing, interested customers will be ponying up $629 for the 16GB iPad, $729 for the 32GB unit and $829 for the 64GB model.

Finally, Apple introduced a handful of new accessories at its shindig in San Jose. iPad mini buyers will have the opportunity to buy a Smart Cover for their new tablet that's similar to the version available with the full-sized iPad. They'll be made of polyurethane and will be available in pink, green, blue, light gray, dark gray and red for $39 each. Some new Lightning accessories are also on the way, with cables that support USB, SD, VGA and HDMI connections.

Rumors of Apple building a smaller version of the iPad have been floating around for over two years, and they've really heated up in recent months, so it's nice to finally be able to put an end to all of the unofficial reports and speculation. The price may be a tad higher than some would've liked, but the iPad mini looks like it could be a option worth considering for folks interested in a tablet that's smaller and more even more portable than all of the 10-inch slates out there. Now we get to watch as the iPad mini and Nexus 7 duke it out in the Great Battle of the Small Tablets. While we wait to see which device comes out victorious, you can read over Apple's official announcement for its new iPads below.

iPad mini has advanced software to detect unintended touches around the screens bezel

iPad mini has advanced software to detect unintended touches around the screens bezelApple officially announced the iPad mini at its special media event yesterday and one of the things that stands out on the iPad mini is the thinness of the bezel surrounding the screen. if you compare the new iPad with the iPad mini, you can see in portrait mode that the bezel on the left and right hand side is much slimmer on the iPad mini. One of the problems with a thin bezel is that it makes holding the device much harder without actually touching the screen and inadvertently interacting with the software on the touch screen. Thankfully Apple has taken care of the problem with some advanced software.

iPad mini is small. But when you use it, it doesn?t feel small. That?s because it?s designed to give you the maximum amount of screen in the minimum amount of space. To achieve that, we had to rethink the relationship between the screen and the overall shape of the product. iPad has symmetrical bezels around all of its edges. But for iPad mini, we reduced the width of the bezels on two sides of the display. So although the screen is smaller, it?s even more prominent. Rethinking the screen meant we also had to rethink the software behind it. iPad mini intelligently recognizes whether your thumb is simply resting on the display or whether you?re intentionally interacting with it. It?s the kind of detail you?ll notice ? by not noticing it. And it?s a great example of how Apple hardware and software work together to give you the best experience possible.

So according to Apple, you don't need to worry about inadvertently touching the screen when you're holding the iPad mini. We will be interested to see how good the software is in real world situations but Apple appears confident enough to make us aware that it exists so we wouldn't be surprised if it works exactly as intended.

Nikon 1 V2 mirrorless camera hands-on! (video)

Nikon 1 V2 mirrorless camera handson! video

If you followed the launch of Nikon's J2 interchangeable-lens compact recently, then waking up to today's announcement of a higher-specced V2 probably won't come as a huge surprise. Nevertheless, whereas the J2 was frustratingly incremental compared to the J1, the V2 will likely represent a more significant upgrade when it lands on shelves at the end of November. For a start, the magnesium alloy camera has been bestowed with a sizable grip, which makes a vast difference to its ergonomics -- it feels much more secure and manageable in the hand, without hurting the small and lightweight appeal of this form factor. Nikon has found room for a pop-up flash too, which is certainly nice to have. The mode dial has moved to the top of the camera and now includes the four main shooting modes (P/S/A/M) -- a change which, in one fell swoop, helps the entire remainder of the control system to become more intuitive and accessible. A new processing engine allows the camera to shoot 15 fps with continuous focus (versus 10 fps with the V1), with Nikon claiming that AF speed has been improved as well. And as for the bad news? It's waiting for you after the break.

WHY IT MATTERS: An election of tipping points

Americans depend on energy for everything from driving their cars to powering factories, homes and offices _ and of course our smart phones, laptops and tablets. How that energy is produced and where it comes from affect jobs, the economy and the environment. (AP Photo/Sue Ogrocki, File)

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Election Day could well determine how much you end up paying in taxes. It could move the bar for fighting future wars. On energy, it could shape the balance between drill-baby-drill (and mine-baby-mine) and some big pollution controls. If you care about Obamacare, this may be your last, best chance to save it or unravel it ? with your vote.

Long after the fuss fades over President Barack Obama's snoozy debate opener and Mitt Romney's weird flub or two, one of them will be hard at work trying to make good on his agenda. This will include pressing any opportunity to reshape the Supreme Court, which hovers over all other issues.

The winner's policies are almost certain to find you where you live, no matter how far you are from Washington in your mind or your place. The taxman cometh. So does the Social Security check for retirees ? and the shakier-by-the-decade promise of those checks for everyone else.

Obama's mandate for almost everyone to have health insurance ? along with all the coverage protections that flow from that ? constitutes the largest reshaping of social policy in generations, with the effects to be felt ever more as the law takes firmer hold in the next few years. If Romney wins and gets enough like-minded people in Congress, he would reset that and try something else.

Though farther from home, the outsourcing of production overseas goes to the heart of American communities large and small as factory jobs vanish, or in some cases come back. Seemingly esoteric subjects like the value of China's currency and the fine print of trade deals affect what you pay for goods and perhaps whether you or the neighbors have work. Less obviously, the debt crisis on a faraway continent affects credit in the U.S. What happens in Greece, Spain and beyond may put your home loan out of reach if the turmoil gets out of hand.

Romney and Obama have sharp differences on these subjects and more, though they don't always make them easy to see. Much of the final leg of the campaign is about reaching for the middle ground. So nothing too radical, please.

For Romney, that means suddenly talking about his interest in seeing Pell grants rise for low-income college students, not about the major changes in government programs that would be required for him even to get close to his deficit-cutting goals.

For Obama, it means preaching fiscal discipline and an aggressive stance on energy production, not focusing on the tax increases for higher-end insurance policies in his health care law or the mercury pollution controls that could shut dozens of coal-fired power plants across the country. Although Obama failed to persuade a Democratic Congress to pass limits he promised on carbon emissions and he shelved a plan to toughen health standards on lung-damaging smog, a second term could give a second wind to steps like these.

Both candidates talk about cutting unnecessary regulation, but Romney's view of what's unnecessary is far more expansive than the Democrat's. That's part of a larger, fundamental and familiar divide between the two parties on the proper responsibilities of government.

Voters, like candidates, can't predict what economic calamity will come out of the blue. But it's clear both from records and rhetoric that Obama believes in the power of government and the Treasury to stimulate growth, add jobs and even save industries in ways that Romney doesn't. On Nov. 6, voters choose governing principles as much as a list of positions.

That holds true on foreign policy, too. At the moment, Romney comes across as just a little more aggressive on the conflict in Syria than does Obama. On Afghanistan, he supports the president's plan to end U.S. combat in 2014, with the qualification that conditions at the time be suitable for withdrawal. Those apparently modest differences may come to nothing after the campaign, or they could prove substantive ? determining whether the U.S. truly extricates itself from one war and how willing it will be to fight another.

The choice in the election doesn't just matter on the issues the candidates want to talk about. It can matter just as much on the issues they avoid. This is where the Supreme Court comes in.

With four justices in their 70s, there's a strong chance the next president will have a chance to fill at least one seat on a court closely divided between conservatives and liberals. One new face on the bench could mean a major change in civil liberties, gay relationships, gun control, health care, the approach to terrorism, perhaps access to abortion, and more, for years to come.

All told, a lot of tipping points on Election Day. That's democracy for you.

Conor Kennedy's Westchester Family Home for Sale | Zillow Blog

The one-time home of Conor Kennedy and his parents, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and the late Mary Kennedy, has hit the market for $3.995 million, according to the NY Daily News.

The estate, coined the ?Kennedy Green Estate,? is where Mary Kennedy ended her life in May while she and her husband were in the middle of a divorce. They have four kids together, and Conor Kennedy is the oldest. Although Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is reportedly the owner of the home, Conor is the the executor of his mother?s estate.

Listed by Ginnel Real Estate broker Mary Dowdle, the home?s listing makes no mention of its tragic past, instead highlighting its green features.

The Kennedys, both environmental champions, had the home at 326 S Bedford Rd, Mount Kisco NY 10549 gutted and redone after a toxic fungus was discovered. The house has ?recycled or reclaimed materials? throughout its finishes, geothermal heating and cooling, energy efficient appliances and fiber optic lighting. Measuring 10,000 square feet on 10 acres in Mount Kisco, NY, the home has 7 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms.

While the tragedy thrust the Kennedy family into the spotlight in May, this summer saw them in the limelight again; specifically Conor Kennedy. The 18-year-old is currently dating country-pop superstar Taylor Swift, and apparently it?s serious; Swift bought a home near the Kennedy compound in Cape Cod.

PFT's power rankings: Falcons are best (now)

Washington Redskins v New York GiantsGetty Images

1. Falcons (five first-place votes):? They?ll have to wait until January to exorcise their playoff demons.? For now, they?ll have to settle for another crack at further erasing the memory of Mike Vick.

2. Giants:? The schedule gets difficult now, which is good for a team that can?t get focused when it?s time to play inferior foes.

3. Bears:? A week after Cam Newton broke out the term ?sweetheart,? the Bears could be calling him slightly stronger names.

4. Texans: The blowout of the Ravens was a welcome bottle of Listerine for that mouthful of Limburger.

5. 49ers:? The nagging feeling that Alex Smith can?t take this team where it wants to go won?t go away.

6. Packers:? With Jacksonville and Arizona heading to Lambeau Field, do the next two weeks qualify as preseason games?

7. Patriots:? The Pats are blowing fourth-quarter leads like it?s Super Bowl XLVI.? Or Super Bowl XLII.

8. Seahawks:? Russell Wilson can take this team a lot farther than anyone realizes.? Especially once they get guys who can catch his passes on a consistent basis.

9. Ravens:? Joe Flacco really is a top-five quarterback.? In his division.

10. Vikings:? Enjoy the ride while it lasts.? After Bears-Packers-Bears, it?ll be over.

11. Broncos:? Of all the .500 teams in the AFC, the Broncos are the best suited to rise to the top.

12. Steelers:? Dropping passes in prime time won?t get Mike Wallace paid the way he wants to be.

13. Redskins:? The last time the Redskins beat the Steelers, RG3 was in diapers.? Now, half the Steelers defense is.

14. Cardinals:? With a three-pack of games against the 49ers, Packers, and Falcons, the losing streak is about to double.

15. Rams:? The Rams have a chance to win pretty much every game.? Soon, they?ll be winning most of them.

16. Eagles:? Middle of the pack is just good enough for Reid to pack it in.

17. Saints:? With the Broncos on the docket in Denver, Joe Vitt possibly wishes he?d had a seven-game suspension.

18. Jets:? For those who think this team is a legitimate postseason contender, the glass is half fool.

19. Bengals:? They should change the name of Paul Brown Stadium to Art Rooney Stadium.

22. Chargers:? If the Chargers are cheating, they need to cheat harder.

23. Cowboys:? In response to Redskins coach Joe Gibbs telling the Cowboys about mistakes he made while coaching, former Cowboys coach Barry Switzer will explain to the Redskins how he got arrested for having a loaded gun in his luggage at the airport.

24. Lions:? The ?our defensive backs are injured? excuse officially has been printed onto a card and laminated.

25. Titans:? Jake Locker?s shoulder may not heal for the rest of the year.? Or next year.

26. Buccaneers:? It?s time to permanently melt the Creamsicles.

27. Bills:? Amazingly, the Bill are only one game out of first place.

28. Raiders:? Amazingly, the Raiders are only one game out of first place.

29. Browns:? Jimmy Haslam won?t make a decision about Pat Shurmur until the season is over.? After the next two games, it will be.

30. Panthers:? The ?suggestion box? is overflowing.? And none of them have anything to do with coffee breath.

Emotional Affairs

I've been married for over 20 years. About 7 years ago my wife told me that she wouldn't have a problem with me sleeping with other woman, as long as I told her about it. Our marriage wasn't going well at the time, so I thought it was odd that she'd allow this. I wondered if maybe she had cheated on me and wanted to give me a similar opportunity.

I discussed trying to share this experience together by maybe swapping with another couple. She seemed open to the idea and I suggested we start by chatting on-line first to see if we were comfortable with this idea.

I began chatting on-line myself and recall going to my wife to let her know that I'd found a few couples who sounded interesting. At this point, she made it clear that she wasn't going to partake in the chatting. I felt confused and a bit angry about how my wife seemed so into this and then she just flat out said forget it.

Since we were having problems with our marriage and I came to enjoy chatting, I started to spend a lot of time on-line. Over the course of the last 5-6 years, I have probably had dozens of what I'd term emotional affairs, some of which have gone on for months and months. Of course, the chat has involved more than just talking about relationships. In many, many instances I've engaged in cybersex.

I truly appreciate that I am no better than someone who goes out and sleeps with someone other than their spouse. Even though I've tried at times to justify my behavior, I know I am a cheater.

I realize that in order for my marriage to work, I need to stop the chatting. I'm not convinced that just stopping the chatting will solve my marital problems, but I feel like I would be able to focus my energy on finding out if it can be salvaged.

Any advice? suggestions? similar experiences?

Motorola Solutions outs HC1 head-mounted computer, keeps workers' hands free in sticky situations (update: video)

Motorola Solutions HC1 headmounted computer

We're very familiar with Kopin's Golden-i, but it was surprising that an early collaboration with Motorola Solutions didn't immediately lead to Motorola selling the head-mounted computer on its own. That odd discrepancy is being patched up now that Motorola Solutions' HC1 is here. The design keeps its signature micro-display, head tracking and voice commands, but sees a slight repurposing from Kopin's focus on security: Motorola Solutions' attention is on giving construction workers, field technicians and soldiers an always-up computer that keeps their hands free when it would be too dangerous (or just unwieldy) to grab a handheld. We haven't been told if the HC1 has been upgraded to that promised TI OMAP 4 chip, although we do know that there's an optional camera to bring on the Aliens-style video feeds as well as pairing support that offers cellular data, GPS and voice calls when linked to the right phone or hotspot. Whether or not the HC1 keeps the Golden-i's $2,500 price is an unknown as well -- that said, the corporate emphasis is more likely to see bulk sales of the wearable PC than any kind of scrimping and saving.

Update: You'll find an official clip for the HC1 after the break.

Laser Eye vision correction will make your life worthy - PDF

Do you wear glasses or contacts? Join the millions of people who had laser eye
vision correction and enjoy the freedoms of perfect vision today!

If you wear glasses or contacts, you know just how
cumbersome and annoying they can be. To give a couple of
examples: in cold weather or when drinking hot beverages,
the lenses of glasses wil fog up and obscure your vision, and
on dry days wearing contacts becomes borderline painful if
eye drops aren't constantly on hand. Chances are, if you are a
wearer if glasses or contacts, you've dreamed about the day
that you'd be able to say good-bye to your glasses or contacts
for good and start enjoying perfect vision without those
cumbersome vision crutches.
If you find yourself being one of these people who want to have perfect vision rather than continue
wearing glasses or contacts, then you're in luck: laser eye surgery, such as the Beverly Hills Lasik, exists
to permanently fix your vision- in shorter time than it takes to eat your lunch!
For detailed information about the doctor click here
Laser eye surgery is a relatively recent development in the field of vision correction; it is, in fact, the first
and only method with which to permanently correct vision. There exist many different types of vision
correction methods within the realm of laser eye surgery: LASIK, LASEK, and PRK, just to name a few.
The most popular vision correction procedure- LASIK- involves the use of a blade or laser to slice off the
top flap of the outer cornea, leaving one edge stil attached to the rest of the eye.
After the flap has been sliced off the LASIK surgeon in Los Angeles wil use a special laser, known as the
excimer laser, to either make the cornea more curved or less curved, depending on the vision issues of
each individual patient. If the cornea is made more curved, farsightedness is corrected and if the cornea
is made flatter, nearsightedness is corrected. Astigmatism, which is a vision problem that results in an
overal blurry vision field, can also be corrected through LASIK, as the laser can alter the shape of any
irregularly-shaped corneas to one that is more normal y-shaped.

Not only wil LASIK and other laser eye surgery procedures help permanently correct vision, but it wil
also do so more cost-effectively than glasses or contacts. This is because there is only one, flat cost
associated with laser eye surgeries whereas the costs that are required of glasses or contacts are regular
and perpetual. In other words, individuals wil end up paying more money for vision maintenance
through glasses and contacts than if they had simply gotten a laser eye surgery. Indeed, it has been
shown that an individual who has his or her vision corrected with LASIK by the age of 20 wil save over
$48,000 during his or her lifetime as compared to individuals that continue to wear glasses and contacts.

Taxes due to go up for 163 million workers in 2013 | NOLA.com

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama isn't talking about it and neither is Mitt Romney. But come January, 163 million workers can expect to feel the pinch of a big tax increase regardless of who wins the election.

A temporary reduction in Social Security payroll taxes is due to expire at the end of the year and hardly anyone in Washington is pushing to extend it. Neither Obama nor Romney has proposed an extension, and it probably wouldn't get through Congress anyway, with lawmakers in both parties down on the idea.

Even Republicans who have sworn off tax increases have little appetite to prevent one that will cost a typical worker about $1,000 a year, and two-earner family with six-figure incomes as much as $4,500.

Why are so many politicians sour on continuing the payroll tax break?

Republicans question whether reducing the tax two years ago has done much to stimulate the sluggish economy. Politicians from both parties say they are concerned that it threatens the independent revenue stream that funds Social Security.

They are backed by powerful advocates for seniors, including AARP, who adamantly oppose any extension.

"The payroll tax holiday was intended to be temporary and there is strong bipartisan support to let that tax provision expire," said Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the top Republican on the Senate Finance Committee. "The continued extension of a temporary payroll tax holiday has serious long-term implications for Social Security and, frankly, it's not even clear that it has helped to boost our ailing economy."

The question of renewing the payroll tax cut has been overshadowed by the expiration of a much bigger package of tax cuts first enacted under President George W. Bush. The Bush-era tax cuts also expire at the end of the year, and Congress is expected to try to address them after the election, in a lame-duck session.

The payroll tax cut could become part of the mix in negotiations that could go in many directions. But lawmakers in both political parties say they doubt it.

"I think there's a growing consensus that Congress and the president can't continue to divert such a critical revenue stream from Social Security," said Rep. Kevin Brady of Texas, a senior Republican on the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee. "I think more and more Americans understand that that payroll tax cut, while politically appealing, is endangering Social Security."

Before he was named as Romney's running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., disparaged the payroll tax cut, calling it "sugar-high economics" that wouldn't promote long-term growth.

Social Security is funded by a 12.4 percent tax on wages up to $110,100, rising to $113,700 in 2013. Half is paid by employers and the other half is paid by workers. For 2011 and 2012, Congress and Obama cut the share paid by workers from 6.2 percent to 4.2 percent.

A worker making $50,000 saved $1,000 a year, or a little more than $19 a week. A worker making $100,000 saved $2,000 a year.

The beauty of the tax cut is that is shows up in weekly paychecks, giving workers more money to spend or save. The downside is that some workers may not notice a $19-a-week increase in pay, making them unlikely to credit the politicians who made it happen.

Under the law, Congress is reimbursing Social Security for the lost revenue, estimated at $103 billion in 2011 and $112 billion in 2012. But Congress didn't cut spending or raise other taxes to offset the lost revenue, so the payroll tax cut is being financed with borrowed money, adding to the national debt.

Democrats are more willing to defend the tax cut, saying it helped prop up the economy during a rough stretch while providing what amounted to a 2 percent pay increase to millions of middle-income workers. But they, too, are concerned about maintaining Social Security's source of revenue.

"I think people realize that was a temporary thing," said Sen. Mark Begich, D-Alaska.

Rep. Richard Neal of Massachusetts, a senior Democrat on the Ways and Means Committee, said he thinks there is evidence that the tax cut helped the economy. But, he added, "I'm not sure that it met expectations."

House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California said she, too, wants to let the tax cut expire.

Larry Summers, Obama's former economic adviser, is a lonely voice in Washington calling to extend the payroll tax cut. He said in a recent speech that the economy is too fragile to reduce workers' incomes.

Obama pushed for the tax cut in late 2010 as a way to increase workers' take-home pay to help boost consumer spending and provide a spark for the economy. Economists were divided on the economic benefits. Many said it probably helped increase consumer spending but there was no consensus on the magnitude.

The initial tax cut was for only a year, and many Republicans in Congress wanted to let it lapse at the end of 2011. But Obama and Democratic lawmakers successfully fought to extend it through 2012.

Obama, however, didn't include the tax cut in his 2013 budget proposal, and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner told Congress this year that he saw no reason to extend it again.

White House spokeswoman Amy Brundage wouldn't rule out an extension but wouldn't commit to one, either.

"The president fought extremely hard last year in the face of Republican opposition to ensure that the payroll tax cut was extended," Brundage said. "There are a number of tax issues that Congress will have to deal with at the end of the year, this being one of them, and we will continue to evaluate all of the options available to us at that time."

Romney's campaign hammers Obama almost every day for proposing to let Bush-era tax cuts expire for individuals making more than $200,000 and married couples making more than $250,000. But Romney's tax plan would let the payroll tax cut expire, an issue he doesn't mention on the stump.

Romney's campaign declined to discuss the issue.

Strong connection found between death of child and mortality of mother

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? The death of a child is a tragic event for a family, bringing with it feelings of numbness, anger, guilt and denial. And, unfortunately, for many families, the loss becomes too much to bear.

A new study co-conducted by a researcher at Rochester Institute of Technology uncovers the strong connection between the death of a child and the mortality of the mother, regardless of cause of death, gender of the child, marital status, family size, income or education level of the mother.

Javier Espinosa, assistant professor in RIT's College of Liberal Arts and an expert in health and labor economics, compiled results from nine years of research after studying more than 69,000 mothers, ages 20 to 50. According to Espinosa, the impact to mother mortality is strongest in the two years immediately following the child's death. In fact, Espinosa's research suggests that mother mortality increases 133 percent after the death of a child.

"To my knowledge, this is the first study to empirically analyze this issue with a large, nationally represented U.S. data set," Espinosa says. "The evidence of a heightened mortality rate for the mother, particularly in the first two years of the child's passing, is especially relevant to public health policy and the timing of interventions that aim to improve the adverse health outcomes mothers experience after the death of a child."

Espinosa's results, "Maternal bereavement: The heightened mortality of mothers after the death of a child," co-written by William Evans from the University of Notre Dame, were recently published in the journal Economics and Human Biology.

Espinosa has also conducted extensive research on spousal mortality in which his studies lead to the conclusion that men who are grieving from a wife's death experience a 30 percent increase in mortality. For women, there is no heightened mortality due to the death of a spouse, but there remains a correlation between the timing of the wife's and husband's deaths. Espinosa believes he understands why this happens, given the data are based on a sample of married people born between 1910 and 1930.

"When a wife dies, men are often unprepared. They have often lost their caregiver -- someone who cares for them physically and emotionally, and the loss directly impacts the husband's health," he says. "This same mechanism is likely weaker for most women when a husband dies. Therefore, the connection in mortalities for wives may be a reflection of how similar mates' lives become over time."

Espinosa, who earned his doctorate in economics from University of Maryland at College Park, is an expert in health economics -- the sub-discipline of economics that deals with the efficient allocation of health-care resources.?

Here's what LG's Nexus 4 looks like on the inside

Android Central

We've all seen numerous photos of the LG Nexus 4 from the outside, but if you've been curious as to what's lurking behind that shiny glass back, then wonder no more. A source has passed the above image to us, showing what you'll find if you unscrew the phone's back panel and look inside. As has been extensively reported in recent weeks, the back is intended to be non-removable, but with a bit of disassembly, it is possible to get inside.

Unsurprisingly, the back is dominated by the battery, which we now know to be a 2100mAh unit. It's not intended to be user-replaceable, but there are just a few standard screws between you and the battery. At a push, we imagine a technically proficient user could perform a successful Nexus 4 battery transplant if required.

The rest is pretty much as we'd expect it to be -- there's a plastic frame, gold contacts for antennae, and cutouts for the rear speaker, 8MP camera and LED flash. Peeking out from under that plastic is the PCB, which houses the 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro CPU, along with RAM, flash storage and other gubbins. Naturally, the SIM card slot isn't sealed behind the glass panel -- instead it's accessible via an iPhone-style microSIM tray on the right edge.

The Nexus 4 is so close, we can practically taste it. Don't forget we'll be live from New York on Oct. 29 for the announcement event!

Thanks, Anon!
