Former Libyan officials in Lockerbie-linked trial

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? Two former senior Libyan officials are on trial accused of squandering $2.7 billion in public money meant to compensate families of those killed in the Lockerbie bombing.

The 1988 bombing of a flight over Lockerbie, Scotland was one of the deadliest attacks on an airliner in modern history, killing all 259 people on board and 11 on the ground. Many of the victims were American college students flying home for Christmas.

Monday's opening session of the trial was brief. The judge said the trial would resume Oct. 15 to give the defense more time to prepare.

Defendant Abdul-Ati al-Obeidi was the regime's foreign minister while Mohammed Zaway served as head of the national legislature under Moammar Gadhafi, who was captured and killed by opponents in last year's civil war.

The two officials denied the charges.

This is How I Know I'm a Writer (by Michael Clark) | Life of the Mind ...

Editor?s Note: This post by Michael Clark is the first in a series that will feature former students of mine who have become professional writers. I asked each of them to focus on the topic, ?Why I Write.??

Dr. Michael Clark has had an inspiring journey as a writer. He has worked professionally as a journalist, a high school English teacher, and now as a college professor. I first met him at Azusa Pacific University, where he became editor-in-chief of the student newspaper while I was faculty advisor. He had extraordinary energy and drive. Once he graduated and became a newspaper reporter, I thought his career was set for life. He was good at it, and he could have stayed with that work for as long as he wanted to. He married another of my talented former students, Heather (Murphy) Clark, an Honors student who became a teacher and is now a part-time college instructor. Michael felt the urge to try teaching, so he completed the education and other steps necessary to move into that career. Once again, I thought he was set. Then he felt the urge to earn a Ph.D. in creative writing and pursue fiction writing. He applied to universities across the country and was accepted at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. It took courage for Michael and Heather to move their young family a couple thousand miles away to pursue this dream, but they did it, and once Michael finished his Ph.D., he was hired as a writing professor at Point Loma Nazarene University, where he now teaches.?

I?m a writer. This is a reality I have finally accepted. I do not have a large number of publications. I may not be very good at it. I can?t really tell. But I am a writer nonetheless (if for no other reason than I use the word nonetheless unreservedly).

How do I know I?m a writer? Simple ? it?s what I do. Two full novels written (unsold), a third well underway (40,000 words and counting), and more than 20 short stories (mostly on my hard drive) that I would show other people attest to the simple fact that writing is more than my hobby. My body of work is solid and continues to grow, whether or not anymore ever sees the light of day. This is how I know I?m a writer.

I have a stack of rejection letters, like every other writer I know. They?re from journals, publishers, and agents across the country. I have a spreadsheet that keeps track of all the times I?ve been rejected and accepted. According to this ledger, I?m deeply in the red. This is how I know I?m a writer.

When I hear stories of famous authors who struggled to find a publisher before they were finally granted a book, I am unabashedly soothed by them. The fact that Elie Wiesel couldn?t sell Night for years gives me hope, not that I will ever be Elie Wiesel, but that I can continue to try. This is how I know I?m a writer.

I simultaneously love and hate with the way I say things. ?I want the ability to revise my conversations as they happen and fully expect that every time I try to put things into words the result will be fantastic. It is a frustrating way to live. This is how I know I?m a writer.

Every aspect of the world around me has the potential to be told. To live and breathe not just in the moment I witness it, but on the page and for much longer than it would have otherwise. Thus, I am alternately interested in everything and overwhelmed to the point of shutting out those closest to me. This is how I know I?m a writer.

I often forget to eat, but I never go long without coffee. This is how I know I?m a writer.

I live in San Diego, three miles from the ocean, but I spend more time in a chair wrestling with the next character, the next scene, the next story than I do in the water. This is how I know I?m a writer.

People tell me that fiction is a dying form and it makes me nervous to the point of feeling like a poet. This is how I know I?m a writer.

I only find mathematics understandable if it is part of a narrative with tension and great character development. When I studied math, I often critiqued the lazy form of word problems. This is how I know I?m a writer.

If you are my friend, part of you might just end up in a story. If you?re my close friend, I might just kill you in print. This is how I know I?m a writer.

I write because it is comparable to breathing. When I do it, it is so natural I don?t think about the fact that I?m doing it. When I don?t do it, it?s pretty much all I can think about and I feel like I?m holding my breath. This is how I know I?m a writer.

?

Michael Dean Clark is an author of fiction and nonfiction as well as a professor of writing at Point Loma Nazarene University. His work, most of which is set in the San Diego area, has appeared in Fast Forward, Relief (where he later became the fiction editor), and Coach?s Midnight Diner among other publications. He is currently at work on his third novel-length manuscript and will move on to number four as soon as he is done. He?s sort of obsessive that way. When he?s not writing, he is likely herding one of his three children around or speaking to his wife sarcastically because sarcasm his love language.

Marijuana smoking tied to testicular cancer: study

(Reuters) - Young men who had smoked marijuana recreationally were twice as likely to be diagnosed with testicular cancer than men who have never used marijuana, according to a U.S. study.

Researchers whose findings appeared in the journal Cancer said the link appeared to be specific to a type of tumor known as nonseminoma.

"This is the third study consistently demonstrating a greater than doubling of risk of this particularly undesirable subtype of testicular cancer among young men with marijuana use," said Victoria Cortessis of the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, who led the study.

"I myself feel like we need to take this seriously now," she added, noting that the rates of testicular cancer have been rising inexplicably over the past century.

The research isn't ironclad proof that the marijuana is to blame, and even if it is, the danger isn't overwhelming. According to the American Cancer Society, a man's lifetime risk of getting testicular cancer is about one in 270 - and because effective treatment is available, the risk of dying from the disease is just one in 5,000.

So far, little is known about what causes it. Cortessis said undescended testicles, in which the testes remain in the abdomen beyond the age of a year, are a risk factor. Both pesticide and hormone exposure have also been associated with the tumors.

Cortessis and her colleagues used data from 163 young men who had been diagnosed with testicular cancer and nearly 300 men in a comparison group without the disease. Both groups had been interviewed about their health and drug use between 1987 and 1994.

Among the men with cancer, 81 percent had used marijuana at some point, whereas that was the case for 70 percent of the comparison group.

By contrast, cocaine use was linked to a smaller risk of the tumors. That's important because it signals that men who have been diagnosed with cancer aren't just more honest about their drug use, thereby creating a spurious link between marijuana and cancer, Cortessis said.

It's not entirely clear how marijuana would influence men's cancer risk, but Cortessis said developing testicles may somehow respond to the drug's main active ingredient.

The new study is "interesting," said Carl van Walraven of the University of Ottawa in Canada, who has studied testicular cancer, but said it has a number of limitations.

For instance, it didn't find an increased risk among men with higher marijuana use, and it was relatively small.

But Cortessis highlighted the consistent results from all the studies so far.

"It is hard to imagine a scenario whereby it is due to chance and I can't think of a systematic bias that would cause this. I will feel very confident that this is cause and effect once we have worked out the biology," she said. SOURCE: http://bit.ly/UEE61v

More problems raised at Pentagon F-35 fighter review

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senior Pentagon officials voiced frustration about the pace of Lockheed Martin Corp's development of the $396 billion F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program at a high-level review on Friday, according to several sources familiar with the program.

Officials did not approve a comprehensive plan for operational testing of the F-35 program as had been expected.

The Pentagon's Defense Acquisition Board huddled for more than four hours on Friday evening in a meeting described by one participant as "very painful" given ongoing challenges facing the high-tech F-35 helmet that is integral to the craft's weapons systems.

Marine Corps Commandant General James Amos told Reuters in an interview on Saturday that he had not been briefed on Friday's review meeting, but said he was closely following work on the helmet, since its completion was needed to allow operational use of the new jets.

"The helmet is a critical piece that needs to be solved," Amos said, noting that the Marines urgently needed the short takeoff, vertical landing (STOVL) version of the plane to replace their aging fighter jets, which include older model F/A-18 Hornets built by Boeing Co..

The Marine Corps had hoped to become the first military service to start using the new F-35B jets this year, but a series of program restructurings has pushed that date back several years.

If the helmet being developed by Vision Systems International (VSI), a joint venture between Israel's Elbit Imaging and Rockwell Collins succeeds, it will be the most advanced ever built.

It is supposed to let pilots see data from all the plane's sensors, effectively allowing the pilot to look right through the floor of the plane and all around it. But the project has run into problems with night vision, delays in displaying the data and a green glow at the visor's edges.

Lockheed Martin has brought in an alternate contractor, BAE Systems to work on a substitute helmet in case the VSI helmet does not meet its deadlines. Current F-35 program manager Navy Admiral David Venlet is meeting with BAE officials during a trip to Europe this week.

Lockheed has also agreed to provide an F-35 jet for dedicated testing of the helmet in coming weeks, the sources said. "These kinds of challenges are normal in a developmental program," Steve O'Bryan, a Lockheed executive, said.

Lockheed officials, who were not at the meeting, said on Monday, technological challenges facing the program were being addressed.

It is not just helmet problems that are afflicting the fighter jet. There are also the high costs of maintaining and operating the aircraft as well as flaws in its software code.

And there are problems as well with Lockheed's internal system designed to track the cost of the F-35 program, said the sources, who were not authorized to speak publicly.

FLIGHT TESTING

The sources said F-35 flight testing was going well, and initial training flights were taking place at Eglin Air Force Base, but Pentagon officials are increasingly frustrated that the technology issues were taking so long to resolve.

"More progress is needed on the complex development activity," said one of the sources. "There's frustration that it's not happening fast enough."

Lockheed, the Pentagon's No. 1 contractor, is developing and building three variants of the new F-35 fighter for the U.S. Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps and eight foreign countries that are helping to fund its development -- Britain, Australia, Canada, Norway, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.

Lockheed officials say the program is making progress, but lawmakers, like the Pentagon, are unconvinced.

The Pentagon's director of testing and evaluation has also repeatedly underscored the need for more testing before the Air Force and Marines start training pilots.

Pentagon spokeswoman Cheryl Irwin declined comment on the closed-door meeting, except to say that it was aimed at providing a status update and no major decisions were made.

The Pentagon's F-35 program office also declined comment, but said officials were keeping a close watch on the program.

"All the technical issues are known and engineering solutions are either in work or being developed to deliver the F-35 to the warfighter," said Joe DellaVedova, program spokesman.

The Marine Corp's Amos said the F-35 program was making progress, and he did not expect huge new problems like the bulkhead cracks that had cropped up in recent years.

The Pentagon's Defense Contracts Management Agency also gave an update on its work monitoring Lockheed's Earned Value Management System after announcing in June that it would withhold 5 percent of the price of the fifth lot of production planes due to continued shortcomings with the system.

"We're not happy that they're not certified. However, the data they provide is still useful for monitoring performance on the program," DellaVedova said.

Major General Christopher Bodgan, who will take over as program manager for the F-35 program at the end of the year, was slated to speak about the program at an Air Force Association conference on Monday.

It will be his first major public appearance since moving to the F-35 program from his previous job managing the Air Force's new refueling tanker.

Wave of attacks kill at least 44 in Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Insurgents killed at least 44 people in a wave of attacks against Iraqi security forces on Sunday, gunning down soldiers at an army post and bombing police recruits waiting in line to apply for jobs, officials said.

The violence, which struck at least 11 cities and also wounded nearly 240 people, highlighted militant attempts to sow havoc in the country and undermine the government.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks but security forces are a frequent target of al-Qaida's Iraq branch, which has vowed to reassert itself and take back areas it was forced from before U.S. troops withdrew from the country last year.

In Sunday's deadliest attack, gunmen stormed a small Iraqi Army outpost in the town of Dujail before dawn, killing at least 10 soldiers and wounding eight more, according to police and hospital officials in the nearby city of Balad, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Baghdad. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release the information.

Hours later, a car bomb struck a group of police recruits waiting in line to apply for jobs with the state-run Northern Oil Co. outside the northern city of Kirkuk. City police commander Brig. Gen. Sarhad Qadir said seven recruits were killed and 17 wounded. He said all the recruits were Sunni Muslims and blamed the early morning attack on al-Qaida, but did not provide details.

The carnage even stretched into the country's south, where bombs stuck to two parked cars exploded in the Shiite-dominated city of Nasiriyah, 320 kilometers (200 miles) southeast of Baghdad. The blasts were near the French consulate and a local hotel in the city, although the consulate did not appear to be a target of the attack.

Local deputy health director Dr. Adnan al-Musharifawi said two people were killed and three were wounded at the hotel, and one Iraqi policeman was wounded at the consulate. Al-Musharifawi said no French diplomats were among the casualties.

Al-Qaida's Iraq franchise, also known as the Islamic State of Iraq, has for years had a hot-and-cold relationship with the global terror network's leadership. The two shared the goal of targeting the U.S. military in Iraq and, to an extent, undermining the Shiite government that replaced Saddam Hussein's regime.

But al-Qaida leaders Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri distanced themselves from the Iraqi militants in 2007 because their attacks also killed Iraqi civilians instead of focusing on Western targets.

A string of smaller attacks Sunday also struck nine other cities, including Baghdad.

In the capital's eastern Shiite neighborhood of Husseniyah, roadside bombs killed a policeman and a passer-by, security and health officials said. Another eight people ? including four soldiers ? were wounded, the officials said.

The rest of the attacks were car bombs that hit cities stretching from the southern port city of Basra, Iraq's second largest, to the city of Tal Afar northwest of Baghdad near the Syrian border.

The blast in Basra killed three people and wounded 24, while the bomb in Tal Afar killed two passers-by and wounded seven, officials said.

A pair of car bombs in southern Maysan province killed five people and wounded 40 outside a Shiite shrine to Imam Ail al-Sharqi, said the holy site's director, Ammar Abdullah.

A roadside bomb in Taji, just north of Baghdad, left two passers-by dead and 11 injured, and explosions in the Sunni towns of Hawija and Ar Riyad, outside the flashpoint city of Kirkuk north of Baghdad, wounded seven people.

In Tuz Khormato near the city of Kirkuk, some 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad, a car bomb outside of a market killed four and wounded 41 people, said Salahuddin provincial health director Raeed Ibrahim. And in Kirkuk itself, Qadir said three midmorning explosions ? two car bombs and a roadside bomb ? killed seven and wounded about 70.

Kirkuk has been a flashpoint for years with its mix of Sunni Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen, who all claim rights to the city and the oil-rich land that surrounds it.

Kurdish leaders long have sought to draw Kirkuk into their self-rule region of Iraq's three northernmost provinces, and have pushed for a census to determine the city's ethnic majority. But the majority Arab central government in Baghdad has delayed the census, which could incite widespread ethnic violence over Kirkuk's future.

Smart sharks pass on feeding tips

Lemon sharks have the ability to learn from each other's behaviour, scientists have found.

The team compared the performance of inexperienced juvenile sharks working with both trained and untrained partners.

The results showed that sharks working with trained partners could complete tasks more quickly and successfully.

The study is thought to be the first to demonstrate social learning in any cartilaginous fish.

"I think it's a really cool finding," said lead author Dr Tristan Guttridge, director of the Bimini Biological Field Station in the Bahamas, whose paper was published in the Journal of Animal Cognition.

The results are a significant breakthrough, according to Dr Guttridge.

"It's a pretty exciting finding that these little lemon sharks are able to pick up social cues from each other," he said.

The evidence came from a task-based experiment with juvenile sharks conducted in an underwater pen.

The pen contained an "indicator zone" which functioned as the start area. In the other corner was a "target zone" in which there was a black and white marker that could be covered or exposed by the scientists.

When the sharks swam into the indicator zone, the target was exposed.

By swimming into the target zone and bumping the black and white target they earned a piece of barracuda, which was lowered into the pool.

One group of sharks, the "trained demonstrators" was trained in this task until they could complete it roughly six times every minute. Another group, the "sham demonstrators", was left untrained.

Members of each group were then paired up with "naive", untrained sharks and the pairs were introduced to the pool, observed and filmed.

Lemon sharks demonstrated their social learning skills during the experiment in the Bahamas

"You can see the shark that's been with the demonstrator, how interested he is in the particular zones, moving between them," said Dr Guttridge of the video footage.

"It's really quite obvious that they're picking up social cues from the other individual and the excited behaviour of the demonstrator is getting the other guy interested as well."

The study then isolated those sharks that had observed the demonstrators to see how they performed on their own.

The juveniles that had been paired with "demonstrator sharks" completed a greater number of trials more quickly than those with untrained partners.

Feeding frenzy

Dr Guttridge originally thought of the experiment while watching the behaviour of lemon sharks near his research station.

"If you see one performing these kind of tight circles and these excited foraging behaviours, often very quickly another one will start doing the same thing."

"[They are] attracted to the kind of behaviour of the other individual and so the lemon shark was the perfect model species for this."

Social learning has already been widely demonstrated among other species and animal groups including corvids, chimps and bats.

"In all these other animals it has been shown to be of real importance to different behavioural processes," said Dr Guttridge, suggesting the same could be true for sharks.

"Sharks do migrate long distances and maybe there's a social context to this as well," he told BBC Nature, comparing his subjects with whales and dolphins that learn their migration routes through culture.

The biologist now hopes to better understand the processes that lemon sharks use to learn from each other.

"There are many different social learning processes and in this paper we haven't demonstrated one over another," he said.

"We would need to do a much more controlled experiment to eke out the actual social learning processes that are going on."

(AP) ? The weather was much better at the U.S. Open on Sunday. So was Novak Djokovic.

Under a cloudless blue sky, in only a hint of wind, defending champion Djokovic got his game into high gear and reached his third consecutive final at Flushing Meadows by beating fourth-seeded David Ferrer of Spain 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 in a match suspended a day earlier.

"I was a different player," the second-seeded Djokovic said. "I felt much more comfortable on the court today than I did yesterday, (when) obviously the conditions were more brutal."

Ferrer led a shaky Djokovic 5-2 in the semifinal's opening set Saturday, when wind was whipping at more than 20 mph and play was halted because of an impending rainstorm. When they resumed about 18 hours later, Ferrer held serve to take that set ? and then Djokovic quickly took control, using the brand of defense-to-offense baseline excellence that has carried the Serb to four of the past seven Grand Slam titles.

"We were all praying for less wind today," Djokovic said. "He handled the wind much better than I did."

In Monday's final, Djokovic will face Olympic champion Andy Murray, who beat Tomas Berdych 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (7) on Saturday. It's the fifth consecutive year the U.S. Open men's title match has been played a day later than planned.

Later Sunday, Serena Williams came back to take the last four games and beat No. 1-ranked Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 for her fourth U.S. Open title and 15th Grand Slam championship. The final was shifted from Saturday to Sunday because of the weather, the fourth time since 2008 the women's event went long, too.

The third-seeded Murray was able to enjoy a day off Sunday, while Djokovic had to put in some work. But in the end, it wasn't too taxing: Djokovic played only about two hours and was finished with Ferrer by 1:20 p.m., giving him more than 24 hours to rest before taking on Murray.

"I don't feel any problems physically. ... It was good to have the job done in four sets," Djokovic said. "I feel fresh as I can be at this stage of the tournament."

Murray is one of only two men to lose each of his first four major finals ? his coach, Ivan Lendl, is the other ? and he'll try to avoid dropping to 0-5. He'll also try to become the first British man since Fred Perry in 1936 to win any of tennis' four most important tournaments.

"I don't think there's any clear favorite," five-time major champion Djokovic said. "He's looking for his first Grand Slam title. I'm sure he's going to be very motivated, and hopefully we can come up with our best tennis for this crowd."

Djokovic leads the head-to-head series against Murray 8-6 but lost their most recent matchup in the semifinals of the London Games.

"Most of our matches that we played against each other were very close," Djokovic said, "and only small margins decide the winner."

He and Murray were born a week apart in May 1987 (Djokovic is younger), and they have come up through the ranks together and know each other well.

Before heading out to warm up for his semifinal, Murray sat in front of a computer with Djokovic and they watched online together while Scotland and Serbia played to a 0-0 draw in a qualifying match for soccer's World Cup.

Djokovic extended his winning streak in Grand Slam matches played on hard courts to 27, including titles at last year's U.S. Open and the Australian Open in 2011 and 2012. He slides along the surface as though it were red clay, allowing him to use his elastic limbs to contort and stretch to get to opponents' shots that appear to be winners.

Over and over and over again Sunday, Djokovic would prolong points until he could gain an advantage or Ferrer would flub a groundstroke. After ending one 25-stroke exchange by snapping off a cross-court backhand winner while serving out the second set, Djokovic bellowed and spread his arms wide, holding a pose, as his parents rose to their feet in his guest box.

By late in the third set, when Djokovic took 12 of 14 points to go from a 3-2 deficit to 5-3 lead, Ferrer was muttering to himself and in the direction of his coach in the stands, the very picture of frustration.

"Playing so bad; a lot of mistakes," Ferrer said. "He was better. I don't have to say nothing. In some games in the third and the fourth set, I lost a little bit my focus."

The loss dropped Ferrer to 0-4 in Grand Slam semifinals, with another of those defeats also coming against Djokovic at the U.S. Open, back in 2007.

Djokovic was playing in his 10th consecutive Grand Slam semifinal, equaling Rod Laver and Lendl for the second-longest streak behind Roger Federer's record of 23.

And after dropping that first set of this semifinal ? the only set he's lost all tournament ? Djokovic immediately began turning things around, breaking Ferrer twice in a row en route to a 5-0 lead in the second. In the third, Ferrer made a little charge, taking three games in a row to briefly lead that set.

But the difficulty that dealing with Djokovic presents began to wear on Ferrer. He would rush shots, trying to sneak balls past Djokovic, and that simply was not going to work on this day. Ferrer made three unforced errors to get broken and fall behind 4-3 in the key third set, and when Djokovic eventually served it out with a 123 mph ace, their match pretty much was over.

In earning his tour-leading 60th match win of 2012, Djokovic also moved a step closer to being able to say he's had the best season. Yes, he will stay at No. 2 in the rankings behind Wimbledon champion Federer, but Djokovic is the only man with a chance to claim two Grand Slam trophies this year, after grabbing three in 2011, when he began the year 41-0.

"In life, you have ups and downs, so I wasn't really surprised with, if you want to call it, a bit less success," Djokovic said. "Regardless of the comparison with these two years, I still think it's been a fantastic year for me."

Anger as Nigeria airline reinstated before crash probe

ABUJA (Reuters) - Nigeria has not concluded its investigation into what caused a plane crash in June that killed 163 people, the accident bureau said on Sunday, despite the government lifting a ban on the airline this week.

The Dana Air flight, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83, smashed into an apartment block in a populated Lagos suburb in June, killing everyone on board and 10 people on the ground, according to a preliminary government report.

The aviation ministry on Wednesday lifted a suspension of the operating license of the privately owned Nigerian airline, saying it was satisfied with its air-worthiness following an audit.

"I cannot be specific on the time that the final report would be ready," Commissioner of the Accident Investigation Bureau (AIB) Muktar Usman told Reuters.

"Every process that needs to be done for the conclusion of investigation is being followed. It will be ready soon."

Air crashes are relatively common in Africa's second biggest economy, which has a poor air safety record.

A preliminary AIB report in July said the captain had reported dual engine failure, but did not say what caused it.

Relatives of the crash victims are furious, and are lobbying the government to suspend Dana until the inquiry is finished.

University professor Ifeoma Onyemelukwe broke down in tears as he recounted how he lost his youngest sister in the crash.

"We try to recover from the shock, then they bring back the airline like that when they don't even know what happened? They have no respect for human dignity. It's like chickens have been slaughtered," he said, adding that some relatives had not yet received bodies of their loved ones because of autopsy delays.

Dana said in a statement on Friday it was "continuing to offer complete cooperation ... in the investigation, and we will continue do so for as long as they require."

Most of those killed in the crash were Nigerians, although the dead included a family of six Americans of Nigerian descent, four Chinese, two Lebanese, a French woman and a British woman.

Among the dead was the spokesman for the state oil firm, Levi Ajuonuma, whose son Obinna is campaigning to shut Dana down.

"All of a sudden, the Federal Government decided to free Dana just like that," he told the local Daily Times. "There are no conclusions on (it), no court ruling, absolutely nothing."

In campaign, a battle over owning America's story

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Over and over, they spun different versions of the same notion. We are telling America's story, they said. We are redefining, recapturing, reframing the American dream. A deep obsession with the story of America ? who tells it and who gets to write its next chapter ? was a rare piece of common ground that speakers at the Republican and Democratic conventions managed to share.

"We are all here to reignite the American dream," said House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California. "Our national story is one of confronting challenges," said Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, a Republican. "Let me tell you my American story," said Rep. Donna Edwards, D-Md. "We're special because dreams that are impossible anywhere else come true here," said Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla.

Mitt Romney spoke passionately of "the essence of the American experience." Barack Obama talked emphatically of "the basic bargain at the heart of America's story."

So it went, with more than 150 mentions of America's "story" or "dream" across the two conventions. Why not? This is, after all, an entire nation founded upon a story of promise and prosperity, of exceptionalism and starting anew, a shared story that to some extent still holds America together and to some extent tears it apart.

A political convention is many things, and an explosion of storytelling is obviously one of them. But burrow deeper into the stories and into the notion of political storytelling itself, and there are clues about how Americans see themselves and where they differ.

"Storytelling forms the heart of political rhetoric," says Curt Smith, who wrote many of the speeches that George H.W. Bush delivered while in the White House. "Ronald Reagan once told me, if you give someone 10 facts and one story and if the story is told well, it's the story that you recall."

In the past two weeks, we saw speaker after speaker use anecdotes that resonated. The story from Democratic Mayor Julian Castro of San Antonio was about his mother fighting hard for civil rights "so that instead of a mop, I could hold this microphone." Rubio spoke of his father, a banquet bartender, and said he embodied the American dream: "He stood behind a bar in the back of the room all those years, so one day I could stand behind a podium in the front of a room."

Beyond the stories themselves, it was striking that many speakers acknowledged and articulated that they were in fact talking about stories and dreams. It was as if they were issuing a message to their constituencies and beyond: America is an epic story, and we must be the ones to define it.

"It's part of our cultural background ? the American story is part of what makes us special. Whether it's the bootstrap theory or Horatio Alger or the American dream, it is very real for many of us," says Natalie Davis, who ran for the Senate in 1996 under the theme "The Promise of America."

"The story works, we can connect to it. And it has strategic value for each party," says Davis, now a political scientist at the Birmingham-Southern College in Alabama. "We have to have it. We're not politically astute. We don't understand the ins and outs of all this stuff. But we know there are words and phrases that ring bells to each of us. And if you can weave those bells and whistles into the narrative, people will buy it."

It's hard to find another country whose destiny has been so wrapped up in story from the very beginning.

First it was "the shining city upon a hill." Then it was "all men are created equal" and "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Each subsequent experience became another chapter. There was the conquering of the frontier, the rise of industrialism, Ellis Island, the spread of the automobile and the roads that carried it, the emergence of America as a global leader, postwar suburbanization. Hollywood only made this more intense, spending decades slickly packaging the American story for mass happy-ending consumption.

Now take all of that and pour it into a single vessel, the one containing the story of the American president (or candidate), who's supposed to embody all the stories that make up our nation. Without mastery of that sensibility, the candidate falls short. Were Walter Mondale and Bob Dole unqualified to be president? Probably not. But they had the great misfortune of colliding with two of the greatest American storytellers, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.

"The presidency of the United States is a very peculiar institution," author Russell Banks writes in "Dreaming Up America," his meditation on what holds us together.

"It's not a person, but a persona or 'role' that a person fills or plays," he writes. "And our president, in some ways even more than a monarch, represents in some very personal way the imagination and the mythology of the people who have elected him. We choose presidents, but we do not choose them on the basis of their experience or even their political views. We choose them based on how well they tap into our basic beliefs, how expressive they are of our own deepest national mythologies."

That's what played out at the conventions ? American stories pressed into service to fill up the vessels that are the two candidates. And once you get past the tropes, the stories start shading subtly toward one political philosophy or the other.

Republican stories were harnessed to demonstrate that Obama's vision of America is flawed. The GOP edition of the American story elevated self-reliance and equality ? of opportunity, not outcome. Republican storytelling emphasizes people as the solution, places God at the center of the equation and contends Obama sacrifices personal accomplishment and rugged individualism by believing government can fix everything and bypassing what Romney calls "the genius of the American free-enterprise system."

Democrats, working with largely the same raw material ? the American dream, the nation as a beacon to the world, the ability to start anew and build a better life for the next generation ? spin a similar tale writ large. But in the details, it emphasizes themes of collaboration, of partnership between private accomplishment and public progress. And it's buttressed by the notion, as Obama put it, that "everyone plays by the same rules" ? a dig at what Democrats consider a GOP narrative that favors the already rich over the people who want to get there.

In the end, what's striking is not how these two stories differ but how they are variations on a theme. Both parties start with what Banks considers the three facets of the American tale ? profits and prosperity, starting over and building a new life, and living in a country that is possessed with a singular holiness that is sometimes godly and sometimes secular.

Both carve out America as something that, more than 200 years later, remains unique. And both use their version of the story as what Smith, who teaches presidential rhetoric at the University of Rochester, calls "an umbilical cord ? connecting tissue between the speaker and the audience, between one human being and millions of human beings."

And without the connecting tissue? What happens then?

There is a very ancient story of a young woman named Scheherazade. As legend goes, Scheherazade, to save her life from a king who liked to behead his women, told him a story every night and never finished it. She kept telling the story, and he kept sparing her to continue it for one more night.

Watching these conventions, speech after speech, and the American stories they so passionately harness, it's hard not to think of Scheherazade. What holds this nation together, exactly, besides geography and a story of possibility? And if we stop telling the story, Republican or Democrat, what will become of us? Beyond the politics, that may be one lesson of the national political convention, 2012 edition: Without the American story, what, exactly, are we?

Primarily Speaking: All About Me...Success!

What. A. Week.? Four day weeks are both a blessing and a curse.? You know what I'm talking about, you get a day off to relax but then you only have 4 days to plan/prep for the following week.? Needless to say, my 31 bag is full of things to cut and glue before Monday rolls around.

This week we worked on our All About Me unit.? It's a mini writing unit that I designed to ease writers back into the writing process.

Writing can be challenging and most students don't do a whole lot of it over the summer.? So, to help my students feel confident and successful upon returning to school, I created three organizers (two are shown) and two fill in the blank writing topics to ease them into narrative writing.

This is one of the organizers that we completed.? I had them write more facts about themselves on the back.? Surprisingly, many of the kids did not know where they were born.? Don't parents tell their kids this kind of stuff?

I love this organizer.? Not only are they brainstorming, but they are also classifying information. By the way, I wish my handwriting was this nice.

?This is the "When I Grow Up" fill in the blank writing page.? They did really well completing their pages.? I love that this girl wants to make a lot of money...I do too.

This is the other fill in the blank writing page (first and third grade versions are also included in the unit).? We used this as a rough draft and the next day the students copied the entire paragraph onto a new piece of paper (no prompts) so that we could hang it on our hallway bulletin board.? This boy wants to be a nerd...love it!

Once the students completed these pages (over the course of several days), they were tasked with writing a "group" of sentences about themselves.? I'm not using the term "paragraph" just yet.

Before I had the kids begin their writing, I modeled how to do this by writing my own group of sentences.? I wrote a paragraph about myself and pointed out the use of topic sentence, some details, and a concluding sentence.? I didn't necessarily focus on these terms, but I did use them.? I mostly explained each part and its purpose and then quizzed the kids before I let them loose.
??

?

The students did great with this writing assignment.? They all had a topic sentence and details.? Most had a concluding sentence, but a few did not.? That is usually a toughie for second graders and I'm not holding it against them at this point.? I think the subject matter also helped too.? They know a lot about themselves and they had spent several days classifying and brainstorming information that would be helpful.

There is also an art component to this unit.? I had the students paint a watercolor portrait.? I have had my students do this every year because they turn out great and I love looking at them every day!? I hang them below my whiteboard and the kids take them home at the end of the year.

?This year, as I was hanging them up, I literally stopped in my tracks when I got to this painting.? It is amazing! And, being a life long freckle girl myself (had them ever since I was a tot), I am in love with her red freckles. ?
I was pretty excited when I created this unit, and now that I have used it with my class, I am excited to use it again next year.? In fact, I already have some ideas for changing it up a bit.? Some users have reported that they used the materials to create individual student books.? What a great idea!? I actually used mine in pieces, but definitely will assemble it as a whole book next year.? This is why feedback is so great!!

Check back this week as I plan to share some part/part/whole activities we used in class.

As ARM-Based Devices Take Over, Intel Cuts Its Sales Forecast For The Rest Of The Year

intelIntel announced today that its sales for the third quarter will be lower than expected due to a decline in demand. Intel microprocessors use the x86 architecture found in most PCs and Macs today. Instead of $14.2 billion, Intel now anticipates $13.8 billion in revenue. It is not due to competition as AMD faces the same problem. Even more important, that decline demonstrates once again that a major shift is occurring in the personal computer landscape. Even though the iPad and other tablets were quickly tagged as a content consumption device, companies such as Apple quickly realized that tablets were canibalizing computer sales.
