Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx Are Up to Mean Business on North Ganson Street

DiCaprio Foxx Leonardo DiCaprio & Jamie Foxx Reuniting for Mean Business on North Ganson Street

Leonardo DiCaprio and Jamie Foxx delivered a couple of their best performances in last year?s Django Unchained, and apparently enjoyed working together enough to repeat the experience.

DiCaprio?s Appian Way company will produce a feature version of the upcoming crime novel Mean Business on North Ganson Street.?Written by?S. Craig Zahler, the book has been acquired by Warner Bros., who is currently seeking a publisher. DiCaprio will produce alongside Appian Way?s Jennifer Davisson Killoran, with Sarah Schechter overseeing for the studio.

The novel?s plot follows a disgraced detective (DiCaprio) who is sent to a town in Missouri where violent crime is on the rise. Deadline provides the following synopsis:

Partnered with an equally bad-assed detective who was demoted for publicly brutalizing a suspect (Foxx), the new partners get to do some real work. Police officers start showing up dead execution-style, and the cops think it might be open season on Victory?s police department.

DiCaprio and Foxx Django Unchained Leonardo DiCaprio & Jamie Foxx Reuniting for Mean Business on North Ganson Street

Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio in ?Django Unchained?

The project certainly sounds promising, echoing classic, 70?s-era crime flicks like Serpico and The French Connection?but with the modern edge of something like Heat. There are no details about who could potentially direct, but Zahler will be adapting his own book for the screen.

With DiCaprio, Foxx and the former?s Appian Way staying so busy, the real question is when ? and maybe if ? we?ll actually see?Mean Business.?DiCaprio is starring in Martin Scorcese?s upcoming? The?Wolf of Wall Street, and is being eyed for the role of?infamous Russian mystic Rasputin;?Foxx plays the President in White House Down and will be the villain Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Not to mention the projects on Appian Way?s slate: Ben Affleck?s adaptation of Gone Baby Gone author Dennis Lehane?s Live By Night, director Brad Furman?s gambling thriller?Runner Runner, and director Scott Cooper?s revenge tale?Out of the Furnace.

That?s a heavy line-up, and with DiCaprio?s recent comments about taking a break from acting, this project could find itself languishing. Announcements like this one for?Mean Business on North Ganson Street?(lets hope that killer title stays put) tend to pop up, gain a director, then vanish into the development ether, but when it involves names like DiCaprio and Foxx, people pay attention. Still, it would be fun to see the two stars transport their surprisingly strong chemistry to a modern-era cop flick, and the material sounds solid.

_____

Expect more details on Mean Business on North Ganson Street?as they become available.?

In the meantime, you can catch Jamie Foxx in White House Down, in theaters today.?Leonardo DiCaprtio will be The Wolf of Wall Street in theaters on November 15, 2013.

A new bizarrely shaped spoon worm, Arhynchite hayaoi, from Japan

June 27, 2013 ? A new species of the peculiarly shaped spoon worms has been recently discovered in Japan, and described in the open access journal Zookeys. These animals derive their name from their elongated and spoon-like projection (the proboscis), issuing from the barrel- or sweet potato-like roundish body proper (the trunk).

The new species Arhynchite hayaoi was discovered on a sandy tidal flat named Hachi-no-higata of the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. Like most spoon worms, the new species has the typical peculiar spoon shaped proboscis. The animal is of a pinkish-yellow colour, and its body length reaches about 10 cm in total.

Spoon worms, scientifically called Echiura, are a small group of exclusively marine animals. Although they are members of annelid worms, most of which has segmented structure, they have lost segmentation during their evolutionary history. Like the new species from Japan, most spoon worms live in shallow waters, but some are connected with deep sea waters. Most representatives are deposit feeders, which means that they use their "spoon" to collect organic particles or fragments from their surroundings.

Previously confused with a different species, the newly described spoon worm used to be in fact rather abundant and collected in great numbers from intertidal to subtidal sandy bottoms for fish bait in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan. Now that the true identity of the species is recognised, it seems to be in decline, with numbers dropping to a point where the spoon worm lost this economic importance.

Kim leads Park by 1 stroke at US Women's Open

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) ? No surprise that a South Korean leads the U.S. Women's Open after the first round, considering the country has produced the last four major champions.

Ha-Neul Kim was an unlikely candidate to be the one to shoot the low score Thursday at Sebonack. Her bogey-free, 6-under 66 put her a stroke ahead of top-ranked Inbee Park.

Park is trying to make history by winning the first three majors of the year. For a day at least, she was upstaged by her much less-heralded friend.

"I was very nervous coming in, and I thought in the practice round that the course was very difficult," Kim said through a translator. "Before playing today I thought that even par would be a very good score for me."

Currently a member of the KLPGA Tour, Kim is a seven-time winner in South Korea. She kept giving herself short birdie putts Thursday and making them.

"I'm enjoying myself," Kim said. "I'm just happy to be here and to be playing in this big event. I'm not really thinking about winning or results but enjoying the moment."

Kim birdied her second-to-last hole with daylight waning to claim the lead after Park held it for most of the day with her 67 in the morning session.

No player has won the first three majors in a season with at least four majors. The 2008 U.S. Women's Open champion, Park has already won five times this year, including her last two tournaments.

American Lizette Salas, Swedes Caroline Hedwall and Anna Nordqvist and South Korea's I.K. Kim shot 68.

Concerned about bad weather, tournament officials moved up the tees, and with the rain holding off, Park was able to play aggressively.

"I never had practiced from those tees, so I was a little bit shocked when I went to the tees," Park said.

Not that she was complaining.

She repeatedly set up short putts, and the way she has excelled in her short game lately, Park was headed to a low score.

"So instead of hitting like 5-irons, we were hitting 9-irons, and that was making the course much easier," she said. "I was actually able to go for some pins and give myself a lot of opportunities today. I made a lot of putts and didn't leave much out there."

Starting on No. 10, Park birdied her first hole then started racking up pars. She made the turn at 2 under before birdies on three of her next four holes.

At 5 under, Park briefly struggled with her tee shots, needing to save par on Nos. 5 and 7. On No. 6, her 15th hole of the day, she had to lay up out of the tall grass and settled for her lone bogey.

Park got back to 5 under on the par-5 eighth with a chip shot to about 5 feet that set up a birdie putt.

Hedwall and I.K. Kim were each at 5 under with a hole left, but closed with bogeys. Nordqvist birdied her last two holes to pull into the tie for third.

The two Swedes grew up playing together.

"Certainly seeing her shooting 4 under in the morning session gave me a little bit of inspiration for the afternoon," Nordqvist said.

Salas, a 23-year-old former Southern California star, played with Park in the last group of the final round of this year's Kraft Nabisco Championship. Three strokes back starting the day, she opened with a double bogey and tumbled to 25th after shooting a 79.

She bounced back to reach a playoff at the LPGA Lotte Championship in April, losing to Suzann Pettersen for her best finish on tour.

"I'm just getting a lot more used to being in contention and really studying the leaderboard and really managing my patience," Salas said. "I think that's been key for me this week. Yes, I still get nervous on the first tee and my hands keep shaking, but I just know that if I just trust myself and trust my instincts, I can perform out here."

Chile's Paz Echeverria, a 28-year-old LPGA Tour rookie also making her U.S. Women's Open debut, and Canada's Maude-Aimee Leblanc shot 69.

Among eight players at 70 was Natalie Gulbis, who withdrew from a tournament and missed two others earlier this year because of malaria. Infected by a mosquito during the LPGA Thailand in late February, she returned for the Kraft Nabisco in early April. Gulbis hasn't finished better than 13th since, missing the cut at the LPGA Championship.

Defending champion Na Yeon Choi, second-ranked Stacy Lewis and amateurs Kyung Kim and Brooke Henderson were among 11 players at 71.

Lydia Ko, the 16-year-old New Zealand amateur who won the Canadian Open last August to become the youngest LPGA Tour winner, had a 72. Juli Inkster, playing in a record-breaking 34th U.S. Women's Open at age 53, holed a 103-yard wedge shot for eagle on the 18th to also finish at 72.

Michelle Wie opened her round with a quadruple-bogey 8 on No. 10. She was at 11 over through 14 holes before birdies on three of the last four to finish with an 80.

Daughter says Mandela 'still there', raps media 'vultures'

By Siphiwe Sibeko

PRETORIA (Reuters) - Nelson Mandela's eldest daughter lambasted foreign media "vultures" for violating her father's privacy as he lay critically ill in hospital, and said the former South African president was still clinging to life on Thursday.

Makaziwe Mandela's outburst came as anxiety increased over the faltering health of the 94-year-old anti-apartheid hero, admired across the world as a symbol of resistance against injustice and oppression and then of racial reconciliation.

President Jacob Zuma canceled a scheduled trip to neighboring Mozambique on Thursday because of the gravity of Mandela's condition, but a mid-afternoon official update said his health had improved.

"He is much better today than he was when I saw him last night. The medical team continues to do a sterling job," Zuma said in a statement. Mandela remained critical but was now "stable", it added.

Makaziwe was sanguine about her father's chances after nearly three weeks of treatment in a Pretoria hospital for a lung infection.

"I won't lie, it doesn't look good," she told state broadcaster SABC. "But as I say, if we speak to him, he responds and tries to open his eyes. He's still there".

Having run the gauntlet of camera crews and reporters at the hospital, Makaziwe criticized what she said was the "bad taste" of the foreign media and intrusion into the family's privacy.

"There's sort of a racist element with many of the foreign media, where they just cross boundaries," she said.

"It's truly like vultures waiting when the lion has devoured the buffalo, waiting there for the last of the carcass. That's the image we have as a family."

Her criticism followed several sharp rebukes from Zuma's office of some foreign media reports that have given alarming details of Mandela's condition.

Spokesman Mac Maharaj declined to comment on the latest report by a major U.S. TV news network that Madiba, as he is affectionately known, is on life support. He said this was part of Mandela's confidential relationship with his doctors.

Makaziwe compared the massive media attention on Mandela, who has been in and out of hospital in the last few months with the recurring lung infection, with the coverage of the death in April of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher.

"We don't mind the interest but I just feel it has gone overboard. When Margaret Thatcher was sick in hospital, I didn't see this kind of media frenzy around Margaret Thatcher," she said. "It is only God who knows when the time to go is."

OBAMA: MANDELA A "PERSONAL HERO"

Mandela's fourth hospitalization in six months has led to a growing realization among South Africans that the man regarded as the father of their post-apartheid "Rainbow Nation" will not be among them forever.

"Mandela is very old and at that age, life is not good. I just pray that God takes him this time. He must go. He must rest," said Ida Mashego, a 60-year-old office cleaner in Johannesburg's Sandton financial district.

In Pretoria and the sprawling Johannesburg township of Soweto, the ruling African National Congress bussed in hundreds of supporters to start a nocturnal vigil for Mandela, the 101-year-old liberation movement's most famous leader.

U.S. President Barack Obama, who is due to visit South Africa this weekend, said his thoughts and prayers were with the Mandela family and South Africa's 53 million people.

Speaking in Senegal, his first stop on a three-nation African tour, Obama said Mandela was a "personal hero". "Even if he passes on, his legacy will linger on," he said.

Pretoria dismissed concerns about disruptions to Obama's schedule, saying it was "getting ready" to welcome the United States' first black president to the historic Union Buildings, where Mandela became South Africa's first black president 19 years ago.

Mandela is revered for his lifetime of opposition to the system of race-based apartheid rule imposed by the white minority government that sentenced him to 27 years in jail, more than half of them on the notorious Robben Island.

He is also respected for the way he preached reconciliation after the 1994 transition to multi-racial democracy following three centuries of white domination.

Mandela stepped down in 1999 after one five-year term in office. Since then he has played little role in public life, dividing his time in retirement between his home in the wealthy Johannesburg suburb of Houghton and Qunu, the village in the impoverished Eastern Cape province where he was born.

India begins mass cremation of flood victims as hundreds missing

Indian Army / Handout / EPA

Mass cremations of victims were taking place in India's flood-ravaged state of Uttarakhand even as rescue operations to evacuate stranded people entered their last phase. More than 840 people died in flashfloods and landslides in the mountainous state from June 15 to 16.

By Nita Bhalla, Reuters

NEW DELHI ? India began the mass cremation of bodies recovered after devastating floods in the country's northern Himalayan region, government officials said on Thursday, adding that hundreds of people were still missing.

The floods, triggered by heavier than normal and early monsoon rains, have killed at least 822 people and displaced tens of thousands of inhabitants in Uttarakhand state, a popular destination for Hindu pilgrims due to its shrines and temples.

The disaster has been dubbed a "Himalayan tsunami" by the media due to the torrents of water unleashed in the hilly region, which sent mud and boulders crashing down, burying homes, sweeping away buildings, roads and bridges.

Eighteen bodies were cremated on Wednesday in the temple town of Kedarnath ? one of the worst affected areas ? and at least 40 would be cremated on Thursday, said a government doctor in Guptkashi, some 25 miles from Kedarnath.

Media reports said 600 bodies have been recovered from the site of Kedarnath alone, but government officials could not confirm this.

"Three of our doctors are currently in Kedarnath and they are trying to help identify bodies which have been found in the area," said Sunil Kumar Verma, one of a team of nine doctors from the Uttarakhand health department.

Verma said Kedarnath was only accessible by helicopter.

The disposal of corpses is important to eliminate the risk of contaminating the water supply and outbreaks of diseases such as diarrhea and cholera.

An air force spokesman said helicopters had been dropping items such as wood and clarified butter - essential materials for Hindus to conduct their last rites.

Heavy rains over the last three days have hampered rescue operations by the army and air force who have been evacuating survivors marooned in and around the four temple towns of Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri since June 15.

Around 96,500 people have so far been evacuated by land and air, said media reports. Television channels have been broadcasting dramatic pictures of desperate pilgrims scrambling to get aboard helicopters.

Government officials said around 350 people had been reported missing, but added that it was likely that there were many more.

"It's very difficult to know the real figures and the scale of the disaster at the moment as many places are still blocked and we are still struggling to get to all the affected areas," said an official with the National Disaster Management Authority.

Twitter update for BlackBerry brings image cards to older phones

Twitter update for BlackBerry brings photo cards to older phones

Not all BlackBerry owners are ready for new phones just yet, but many of them still want to browse their Twitter feeds as efficiently as possible. A Twitter 4.2 update launching today should keep those users satisfied: the release brings image cards to BlackBerry OS 5 and up, letting those on older devices peek at photos in the timeline. The upgraded version also populates that timeline with more details about the tweets themselves, and it suggests people to follow when looking at profiles. If those additions are enough to fight off the urge for a hardware upgrade, the new Twitter app is available at the source link.

Obama Won't Approve Keystone Pipeline Unless It Passes New Test

President Obama told hundreds of climate change advocates on Tuesday that he will not approve the controversial Keystone XL pipeline if it ?significantly exacerbated the problem of carbon pollution," a move that's expected to excite environmental activists.

The comments prompted cheers from the crowd who had assembled at Georgetown University on a humid 90-degree day in Washington to listen to the most substantive speech Obama has given on climate change as president.

?The net effects of climate impact will be absolutely critical to determining whether this project is allowed to go forward,? Obama said.

The president?s comments represent a political shift. His top aides have repeatedly said the White House was not interjecting itself in a process reviewing the project that is underway at the State Department. By stressing the climate change impacts of the pipeline, Obama is acknowledging the concerns of environmentalists.

Moments later, however, Obama also sought to downplay the impact one pipeline has on global warming. ?It certainly has to be about more than building one pipeline,? said Obama, drawing muffled, quieter cheers than his comments on the project.

The pipeline, which would send carbon-heavy oil sands more than a thousand miles from Alberta to Texas, is currently facing a review from the State Department that is not expected to be done until later this year.

The State Department has already concluded the climate change impact of the pipeline would be negligible. According to a draft environmental assessment released earlier this year, the State Department said that ?if the proposed Project were to induce growth in the rate of extraction in the oil sands, then it could cause GHG emissions greater than just its direct emissions.? The very next paragraph concluded that ?approval or denial of the proposed Project is unlikely to have a substantial impact on the rate of development of the oil sands, or on the amount of heavy crude oil refined in the Gulf Coast area.?

In a statement criticizing the administration's posturing, House Speaker John Boehner's office noted that passage as reason that Obama should green light the Keystone project, which has faced years of regulatory and political delays.

?The standard the president set today should lead to speedy approval of the Keystone pipeline,? Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck said in a statement after Obama?s speech. ?Based on the lengthy review by the State Department, construction of the pipeline would not have a significant environmental impact.? It?s time to sign off on Keystone and put Americans to work.?

Exclusive: Japan's Meiji Yasuda nears deal for Thai Life stake - sources

By Taiga Uranaka and Denny Thomas

TOKYO/HONG KONG (Reuters) - Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance Co has entered into exclusive talks to buy a 15 percent stake in Thai Life Insurance Co for around $700 million, people familiar with the matter told Reuters, as Japanese insurers step up their presence in Southeast Asia.

Meiji Yasuda, Japan's second-largest life insurer by premium income after Nippon Life Insurance Co, beat Sumitomo Life Insurance Co to enter final negotiations, in an auction that had attracted private equity firms Carlyle Group , KKR & Co and CVC Capital Partners, the people said.

A deal is expected as early as next week, one person familiar with the matter said.

If successful, Meiji Yasuda's purchase will make it the fourth financial services acquisition by a Japanese firm in Southeast Asia this year, bringing the year-to-date total value of Japanese M&A deals in the region to $6.6 billion.

Rising personal income in Southeast Asia is giving, for the first time in many cases, individuals and families the ability to afford insurance. That new demand has boosted stock prices and corporate valuations, culminating in a spate of M&A transactions.

To tap into that growth, Japanese insurers and banks have turned aggressive buyers of Southeast Asian financial services companies as they battle sluggish growth in their home market.

Meiji Yasuda officials were invited to Thailand recently for the discussions, while Sumitomo Life was told that the process has temporarily ended for them, a second source said.

A Meiji Yasuda spokesman declined comment, while Thai Life officials were unavailable for an immediate comment.

JAPAN INC

Unlisted Thai Life, the country's second-biggest life insurer, is selling a minority stake to help fund the next stage of its growth.

The stake sale is set to be Thailand's third insurance deal in the past year, with at least two more insurance deals said to be brewing in Southeast Asia.

Facing slow growth at home, Japan's financial services industry, as well as other sectors, have bought into Southeast Asian businesses to expand abroad, often taking minor stakes.

Japan's biggest lender Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG) is in advanced talks to buy a majority stake in Thailand's Bank of Ayudhya for over $4 billion.

In a related deal, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group agreed in May to acquire a $1.5 billion stake in Indonesia's BTPN .

Southeast Asia has emerged as a key battleground for global and regional insurers, with international companies attracted by the region's rapidly growing market.

Last year, Prudential Plc struck a $590 million deal to buy the insurance unit of Thailand's Thanachart Bank, and Hong Kong businessman Richard Li bought ING's operations in Hong Kong, Macau and Thailand.

All those deals have boosted insurance M&A in Southeast Asia to a record $13.1 billion last year, compared with a total of $3.9 billion in the previous four years, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Swiss Re Economic Research & Consulting forecasts that life insurance premiums in emerging Asia - a region comprising of seven countries, including China, India, Malaysian, Thailand - will grow at a compounded annual rate of 8.5 percent between 2011 and 2021 to $631 billion. By contrast, premiums in industrialized countries will expand 2.9 percent in the same period.

Meiji Yasuda's discussions for buying a minority stake comes just weeks after another Japanese company Dai-ichi Life Insurance Co Ltd agreed to purchase a 40 percent stake in Indonesia's Panin Life for $337 million.

Thai Life had 15.3 percent of the country's life insurance market with annualized premium equivalent of 6.2 billion baht ($202 million) as of the end of the second quarter of 2011, according to Thai Life Assurance Association data.

Thai Life is controlled by the Thailand's Chaiyawan family.

Barclays is advising Thai Life on the sale, according to a previous Reuters report.

Judge: Defense can use Zimmerman statements

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ? George Zimmerman's defense attorneys can use the neighborhood watch volunteer's claim that he was screaming for help moments before he fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Judge Debra Nelson made the ruling Monday shortly before opening statements in Zimmerman's second-degree murder trial.

Zimmerman told a police officer and neighbor that he was yelling for help but nobody responded during his confrontation with Martin.

Zimmerman is pleading not guilty to second-degree murder, claiming self-defense.

Arguments over whether the remarks could be used by the defense delayed opening statements, which were scheduled to begin Monday after almost two weeks of picking a jury.

Zimmerman, who identifies himself as Hispanic, says he shot Martin in self-defense. Prosecutors say Zimmerman racially profiled Martin as he walked through a gated community where Zimmerman lived and often patrolled. Martin was returning from a convenience store on a rainy night in February 2012, wearing a dark hooded shirt. The two eventually got into a fight and Zimmerman shot Martin.

Circuit Judge Debra Nelson ruled last week prosecutors will be able to use the word "profiled" in their opening statements, as long as their description isn't limited to racial profiling. Prosecutors will be able to describe Zimmerman as a "wannabe cop" and "vigilante" and will be able to say Zimmerman confronted Martin.

"We don't intend to say he was profiled solely because of race," prosecutor John Guy said last week.

Defense attorneys Mark O'Mara and Don West will argue the case is simply self-defense, free of the racial overtones that have overshadowed it. The initial decision not to charge Zimmerman led to public outrage and demonstrations around the nation. Civil rights leaders and others accused the police in the central Florida city of Sanford of failing to thoroughly investigate the shooting because Martin was a black teen from Miami. Martin was visiting his father in Sanford when he was shot.

"We're trying so hard in this case not to make it what everybody outside the courthouse wants it to be," O'Mara said.

On Feb. 26, 2012, Zimmerman spotted Martin, whom he did not recognize, walking in the townhome community where Zimmerman and the fiancee of Martin's father lived. There had been a rash of recent break-ins and Zimmerman was wary of strangers walking through the complex.

The two eventually got into a struggle and Zimmerman shot Martin in the chest with his 9mm handgun. He was charged 44 days after the shooting, only after a special prosecutor was appointed to review the case and after protests.

"I ask that you pray for me and my family because I don't want any other mothers to have to experience what I'm going through now," said Sybrina Fulton, Martin's mother, shortly before the start of opening statements.

Two police dispatch phone calls will be important evidence for both sides' cases.

The first is a call Zimmerman made to a nonemergency police dispatcher as he followed Martin walking through his gated community. At one point, the dispatcher tells Zimmerman he doesn't need to be following Martin.

The second 911 call captures screams from the confrontation between Zimmerman and Martin. Martin's parents said the screams are from their son while Zimmerman's father contends they belong to his son.

Nelson ruled last weekend that audio experts for the prosecution won't be able to testify that the screams belong to Martin, saying the methods the experts used were unreliable.

Western Digital boosts SSD cred with $340 million sTec acquisition

Western Digital boosts SSD cred with $340 million sTec acquisition

Western Digital has clearly made a name for itself in the magnetic drive space, but it's hardly the go-to brand when it comes to SSDs. WD's betting that'll soon change, though, thanks to a $340 million investment. That sum will be used to acquire sTec Inc., a US-based SSD manufacturer best known for its enterprise solid-state drives (and a recent insider trading scandal). The company will fall under HGST, a WD wholly owned subsidiary, and will likely continue focusing its efforts on SSDs designed for business use -- serving up ones and zeroes in servers and data centers, for example. Indonesia makes first arrests amid Sumatra fires: two farmers

By Kanupriya Kapoor

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesian police on Monday arrested two farmers for illegally starting fires to clear land in Sumatra, the first detentions linked to blazes that have blanketed neighboring Singapore and Malaysia with thick smog for days.

Police said the two farmers were not linked to any of the eight companies the government suspects are responsible for Southeast Asia's worst air pollution crisis in years.

The parent companies of those firms included Malaysia-listed Sime Darby, which has denied wrongdoing.

"We arrested two farmers in Riau who were clearing their land by burning. They were not working for anyone but just clearing their own land," said Agus Rianto, deputy spokesman for the national police.

Under Indonesian law, any company or person involved in an illegal forest fire faces up to 10 years in prison and fines of up to 5 billion rupiah ($503,800).

The smog has cleared in the financial center of Singapore, with the pollution index remaining under "unhealthy levels" for the second consecutive day. It hit a record of 401 on Friday afternoon, a level considered potentially life-threatening for the ill and the elderly.

A conference on nuclear policy was postponed due to some participants unwilling to travel to Singapore because of the haze. The speakers included former U.S. secretary of state George Shultz and former secretary of defense William Perry.

UK bomb experts called to check mosque

LONDON (AP) ? British police say army bomb disposal experts have been called to a mosque after a suspicious item was found.

West Midlands Police say that around 40 homes near the Aisha Mosque and Islamic Center in Walsall, near the central England city of Birmingham, were evacuated overnight as a precautionary measure.

The force said officers were alerted to the suspicious item on Saturday night.

Investigators were taking evidence outside the mosque Sunday, and parts of the nearby area were cordoned off.

It was not immediately clear what the item was or what potential dangers it posed. No injuries were reported.

Mosques and Muslim communities in Britain have been on alert since a British soldier was killed in London in May.

White Sox capitalize late to beat Royals

By DAVE SKRETTA

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Kansas City Royals had a runner on third base with one out in the eighth inning and left him there. The Chicago White Sox had the same situation in the ninth and brought him home.

That about summed up their game on Saturday.

The White Sox eked out a 3-2 victory when ace reliever Jesse Crain shut down the Royals in a shaky eighth inning, and Alejandro De Aza provided his timely sacrifice fly to score pinch-runner Jordan Danks from third base in the top of the ninth.

"We both had the same situation late - had the winning run on third base - and they executed and we didn't," Royals manager Ned Yost said.

It wasn't quite that simple, of course.

Eric Hosmer hit a long fly to right field in the ninth that fell for a triple thanks in part to some miscommunication in the White Sox outfield. But Crain (2-1) calmly got Salvador Perez to pop out and then struck out Lorenzo Cain for his 29th consecutive scoreless appearance.

That kept the game tied going to the ninth inning.

Dayan Viciedo led off with a single against Aaron Crow (3-3), and Jeff Keppinger drew a walk to reach base for the fourth time. Yost brought in closer Greg Holland, and he got pinch-hitter Gordon Beckham to fly out to center field. But that allowed Danks - who was running for Viciedo - to reach third base with one out.

De Aza laid off a couple of pitches out of the zone before ripping a fly ball to right field that was just deep enough to allow Danks to slide home ahead of the throw.

"I was trying to get a pitch that I could make some contact and drive that run in," De Aza said. "The hitters in front me, they all did their job and gave me a chance to drive one in."

Keppinger and Conor Gillaspie also drove in runs for the White Sox, who have taken the first two games in the three-game set after starting 1-6 on their 10-game road trip.

"It seems like we're always on the losing end of one-run games, so fundamentally to get a sac fly to get the winning run, it's a good feeling," Keppinger said. "Hopefully we can build off it."

The Royals, meanwhile, have dropped four straight since climbing back to .500.

"We're all scratching our heads," Yost said. "The consistency of our offense has been a little bit mind-boggling. It's getting them to stay relaxed in situations."

Kansas City (34-38) is 11-33 when scoring three runs or fewer this season.

"It's baseball, man. It's a hard game," the Royals' Mike Moustakas said. "Sometimes you get the job done, sometimes you don't get it done, and that's just kind of how it turns out."

The Royals struck first when Miguel Tejada, starting at second base for the ninth time in his 16-year career, hit a two-out single in the second inning. The 39-year-old then chugged all the way around on a double by Moustakas to give Kansas City the early lead.

It was the first RBI for Moustakas since May 23.

The White Sox threatened in the third when Keppinger singled and Tyler Flowers walked to start the inning. Alex Rios hit a ball down the right-field line that fell foul by just a couple of feet, and then he struck out looking to keep the White Sox off the scoreboard.

At least until the fourth.

Dunn, who was hitting .186 coming into the game, walked leading off the inning. Paul Konerko followed with a single up the middle, and Gillaspie's slow roller up the middle was enough to drive in Dunn with the tying run.

Wade Davis nearly escaped the inning when he got Viciedo to ground into a double play, but Keppinger delivered a single to right that gave the White Sox a 2-1 lead.

Kansas City was poised for a big sixth inning, tying the game on a single by Perez and putting runners on first and second with one out. But reliever Matt Lindstrom entered the game and got Lorenzo Cain to ground into a double play on his first pitch to end the threat.

White Sox starter Jose Quintana wound up going 5 1-3 innings, while Davis made it through seven innings on the warm afternoon. He also gave up two runs for the Royals.

"Tough loss," Davis said, "having a tie game in the ninth inning."

NOTES: Keppinger started at 2B in place of Beckham and finished 3 for 3. ... The Royals activated OF Jarrod Dyson (right high ankle sprain) from the DL and optioned 2B Chris Getz to Triple-A Omaha. ... RHP Dylan Axelrod goes to the mound for the White Sox in Sunday's series finale. RHP James Shields starts for Kansas City.
