In Asia's trend-setting cities, iPhone fatigue sets in

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Apple Inc's iconic iPhone is losing some of its luster among Asia's well-heeled consumers in Singapore and Hong Kong, a victim of changing mobile habits and its own runaway success.

Driven by a combination of iPhone fatigue, a desire to be different and a plethora of competing devices, users are turning to other brands, notably those from Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, eating into Apple's market share.

In Singapore, Apple's products were so dominant in 2010 that more devices here ran its iOS operating system per capita than anywhere else in the world.

But StatCounter http://gs.statcounter.com, which measures traffic collected across a network of 3 million websites, calculates that Apple's share of mobile devices in Singapore - iPad and iPhone - declined sharply last year. From a peak of 72 percent in January 2012, its share fell to 50 percent this month, while Android devices now account for 43 percent of the market, up from 20 percent in the same month last year.

In Hong Kong, devices running Apple's iOS now account for about 30 percent of the total, down from about 45 percent a year ago. Android accounts for nearly two-thirds.

"Apple is still viewed as a prestigious brand, but there are just so many other cool smartphones out there now that the competition is just much stiffer," said Tom Clayton, chief executive of Singapore-based Bubble Motion http://www.bubblemotion.com, which develops a popular regional social media app called Bubbly.

Where Hong Kong and Singapore lead, other key markets across fast-growing Asia usually follow.

"Singapore and Hong Kong tend to be, from an electronics perspective, leading indicators on what is going to be hot in Western Europe and North America, as well as what is going to take off in the region," said Jim Wagstaff, who runs a Singapore-based company called Jam Factory http://www.jamfactoryonline.com developing mobile apps for enterprises.

Southeast Asia is adopting smartphones fast - consumers spent 78 percent more on smartphones in the 12 months up to September 2012 than they did the year before, according to research company GfK http://www.gfkrt.com.

IN WITH THE YOUNG CROWD

Anecdotal evidence of iPhone fatigue isn't hard to find: Where a year ago iPhones swamped other devices on the subways of Hong Kong and Singapore they are now outnumbered by Samsung and HTC Corp smartphones.

While this is partly explained by the proliferation of Android devices, from the cheap to the fancy, there are other signs that Apple has lost followers.

Singapore entrepreneur Aileen Sim, recently launched an app for splitting bills called BillPin http://www.billpin.com, settling on an iOS version because that was the dominant platform in the three countries she was targeting - Singapore, India and the United States.

"But what surprised us was how strong the call for Android was when we launched our app," she said.

Indeed, 70 percent of their target users - 20-something college students and fresh graduates - said they were either already on Android or planned to switch over.

"Android is becoming really hard to ignore, around the region and in the U.S. for sure, but surprisingly even in Singapore," she said. "Even my younger early-20s cousins are mostly on Android now."

BillPin launched an Android version this month.

Napoleon Biggs, chief strategy officer at Gravitas Group http://www.gravitas.com.hk, a Hong Kong-based mobile marketing company, said that while Apple and the iPhone remained premium brands there, Samsung's promotional efforts were playing to an increasingly receptive audience.

For some, it is a matter of wanting to stand out from the iPhone-carrying crowd. Others find the higher-powered, bigger-screened Android devices better suited to their changing habits - watching video, writing Chinese characters - while the cost of switching devices is lower than they expected, given that most popular social and gaming apps are available for both platforms.

"Hong Kong is a very fickle place," Biggs said.

Janet Chan, a 25-year-old Hong Kong advertising executive, has an iPhone 5 but its fast-draining battery and the appeal of a bigger screen for watching movies is prodding her to switch to a Samsung Galaxy Note II.

"After Steve Jobs died, it seems the element of surprise in product launches isn't that great anymore," she said.

To be sure, there are still plenty of people buying Apple devices. Stores selling their products in places such as Indonesia were full over the Christmas holidays, and the company's new official store in Hong Kong's Causeway Bay has queues snaking out of the door most days.

But the iPhone's drop in popularity in trendy Hong Kong and Singapore is mirrored in the upmarket malls of the region.

"IPhones are like Louis Vuitton handbags," said marketing manager Narisara Konglua in Bangkok, who uses a Galaxy SIII. "It's become so commonplace to see people with iPads and iPhones so you lose your cool edge having one."

In the Indonesian capital Jakarta, an assistant manager at Coca Cola's local venture, Gatot Hadipratomo, agrees. The iPhone "used to be a cool gadget but now more and more people use it."

There is another influence at play: hip Korea. Korean pop music, movies and TV are hugely popular around the region and Samsung is riding that wave. And while the impact is more visible in Hong Kong and Singapore, it also translates directly to places like Thailand.

"Thais are not very brand-loyal," says Akkaradert Bumrungmuang, 24, a student at Mahidol University in Bangkok. "That's why whatever is hot or the in-thing to have is adopted quickly here. We follow Korea so whatever is fashionable in Korea will be a big hit."

Leading Democrat: Gun control faces uphill climb

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who's leading the push to restore an assault weapon ban, acknowledged on Sunday that the effort faces tough odds to pass Congress and she blamed the nation's largest gun-rights group.

Feinstein, D-Calif., on Thursday introduced a bill that would prohibit 157 specific weapons and ammunition magazines that have more than 10 rounds. The White House and fellow Democrats are skeptical the measure is going anywhere, given lawmakers who are looking toward re-election might fear pro-gun voters and the National Rifle Association.

"This has always been an uphill fight. This has never been easy. This is the hardest of the hard," Feinstein said.

"I think I can get it passed because the American people are very much for it," Feinstein said of the measure that follows a similar measure she championed into law 1994 but expired a decade later.

She acknowledged, however, the NRA's political clout.

"They come after you. They put together large amounts of money to defeat you," Feinstein said.

She also said the group was a pawn of those who make weapons.

"The NRA is venal. ... The NRA has become an institution of gun manufacturers," she said.

The NRA disputed her characterization.

"The NRA is a grass-roots organization. We have more than 4 million dues-paying members and tens of millions of supporters all across this country. Our political power comes from them. Decent and logical people would understand that," spokesman Andrew Arulanandam said.

The Senate Judiciary Committee plans to take up the proposal on Wednesday and hear from the NRA's CEO and senior vice president, Wayne LaPierre. Mark Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabby Giffords, D-Ariz., who was shot in an assassination attempt, also plans to testify.

Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, the GOP vice presidential nominee in 2012, said Congress should focus on the causes of violence and not the weapons alone.

"We need to look beyond just recycling failed policies of the past. ... Let's go beyond just this debate and make sure we get deeper. What's our policy on mental illness? What's going on in our culture that produces this kind of thing? You know, we need to have that kind of a discussion and debate," Ryan said.

Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., also urged lawmakers to consider mental health issues.

"When I hear some of this conversation, I think that we're looking at symptoms, we're not looking at the root causes," she said. "And I understand the senator's passion for this, but I got to tell you, an assault ban is not the answer to helping keep people safe."

New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, who favors the assault weapons ban, expressed skepticism that it would be returned to law.

"It's probably a heavy lift in Congress," he said.

In the wake of the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn. In December, President Barack Obama has pushed to expanded background checks, restoring the assault weapons ban and banning high-capacity ammunition magazines. But members of his own party may thwart his hopes.

Feinstein appeared on CBS' "Face the Nation" and CNN's "State of the Union." Ryan was on NBC's "Meet the Press." Blackburn and Kelly were on CBS.

Japan to boost military headcount amid china island row

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japan is set to boost the number of military personnel, Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said on Sunday, as the new government led by the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) tackles a territorial spat with China over East China Sea islets.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe led the LDP to a landslide election victory last month, promising to beef up the military and stand tough in the dispute over tiny, uninhabited islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.

The number of personnel, now standing at about 225,000, will increase by 287 in the next fiscal year starting in April, Onodera told reporters after meeting Finance Minister Taro Aso for the final budgetary negotiations.

Onodera said the increase was the biggest in two decades. The figure represents an expansion of about 0.1 percent.

"This would allow us to firmly reinforce our surveillance activities in the southwest," Onodera said.

The disputed islets are located to the southwest of Japan's main islands, where two countries share a maritime border.

Both China and Japan sought to cool down tensions in the row last week, with Chinese Communist Party chief Xi Jinping telling an envoy from Abe that he was committed to developing bilateral ties.

Onodera also said that the defense budget will grow 40 billion yen ($440 million), or about 0.8 percent, in the year from April, posting positive growth for the first time in 11 years.

A small budget rise had been expected as the LDP campaigned in December's lower house election on pledges to boost defense spending. The Defence Ministry this month requested an annual increase of about 100 billion yen in its budget.

American pastor sentenced to 8 years in Iran

(AP) ? An American pastor who has been jailed in Iran since September has been sentenced to eight years in prison, the U.S. State Department said Sunday.

Spokesman Darby Holladay said the department is calling on Iran to respect Saeed Abedini's human rights and release him.

Earlier this month, Iran's semi-official news agency, ISNA, quoted Abedini's attorney, Nasser Sarbazi, as saying his client stood trial in the Revolutionary Court on charges of attempting to undermine state security by creating a network of Christian churches in private homes.

The pastor, who is of Iranian origin but lives in Boise, Idaho, has rejected the charges.

"Mr. Abedini's attorney had only one day (Jan. 21) to present his defense, so we remain deeply concerned about the fairness and transparency of Mr. Abedini's trial," Holladay said.

Following the court presentation, ISNA quoted Sarbazi as saying the court would issue its verdict later, and that Abedini would be allowed to leave Iran and meet his family in the U.S. after posting bail.

"The promise of his release was a lie," said the pastor's wife, Naghmeh. "With today's development, I am devastated for my husband and my family. We must now pursue every effort, turn every rock, and not stop until Saeed is safely on American soil."

Her comments were provided by the Washington-based American Center for Law and Justice, which focuses on constitutional and human rights law around the world. The center is representing the pastor's family in the United States.

Holladay said the State Department is in close contact with Abedini's family and actively engaged in the case. Abedini and his wife have two children.

"We condemn Iran's continued violation of the universal right of freedom of religion," Holladay said.

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- Mussels can be a mouthwatering meal, but the chemistry that lets mussels stick to underwater surfaces may also provide a highly adhesive wound closure and more effective healing from surgery.

In recent decades bioahesives, tissue sealants and hemostatic agents became the favored products to control bleeding and promote tissue healing after surgery. However, many of them have side effects or other problems, including an inability to perform well on wet tissue.

"To solve this medical problem, we looked at nature," said Jian Yang, associate professor of bioengineering at Penn State. "There are sea creatures, like the mussel, that can stick on rocks and on ships in the ocean. They can hold on tightly without getting flushed away by the waves because the mussel can make a very powerful adhesive protein. We looked at the chemical structure of that kind of adhesive protein."

Yang, along with University of Texas-Arlington researchers Mohammadreza Mehdizadeh, Hong Weng, Dipendra Gyawali and Liping Tang, took the biological information and developed a wholly synthetic family of adhesives. They incorporated the chemical structure from the mussel's adhesive protein into the design of an injectable synthetic polymer. The bioahesives, called iCMBAs, adhere well in wet environments, have controlled degradability, improved biocompatibility and lower manufacturing costs, putting them a step above current products such as fibrin glue and cyanoacrylate adhesives.

Fibrin glues are fast acting and biodegradable but have relatively poor adhesion strength. They may also carry risk of blood-borne disease transmission and have the potential for allergic reactions due to animal-based ingredients. Cyanoacrylate adhesives -- super glues -- offer strong adhesion, rapid setting time and strong adhesion to tissue, but they degrade slowly and may cause toxicity, often limiting their use to external applications.

Additionally, neither product is effective when used on wet tissue, a requirement of internal organ surgery, nor are there any current commercially available tissue adhesives or sealants appropriate for both external and internal use.

The researchers tested the newly developed iCMBAs on rats, using the adhesive and finger clamping to close three wounds for two minutes. Three other wounds were closed using sutures. The researchers reported their findings in a recent issue of Biomaterials.

The iCMBAs provided 2.5 to 8.0 times stronger adhesion in wet tissue conditions compared to fibrin glue. They also stopped bleeding instantly, facilitated wound healing, closed wounds without the use of sutures and offered controllable degradation.

"If you want the material to stay there for one week, we can control the polymer to degrade in one week," said Yang. "If you want the material to stay in the wound for more than a month, we can control the synthesis to make the materials degrade in one month."

The iCMBAs are also non-toxic, and because they are fully synthetic, they are unlikely to cause allergic reactions. Side effects were limited to mild inflammation.

"If you put any synthetic materials into your body," said Yang, "the body will generate some inflammation."

The researchers are now working on improving the formula.

"We are still optimizing our formulation," said Yang. "We are still trying to make the adhesion strength even stronger" to expand its use for things like broken bones where strong adhesion is tremendously important.

The researchers are also looking at adding in components that could control infection.

"We can introduce another component with anti-microbial properties, so it can do two functions at once," said Yang.

The iCMBAs could eventually be used in a wide range of surgical disciplines from suture and staple replacement to tissue grafts to treat hernias, ulcers and burns.

"There are so many applications that you can use this glue for to help in surgery," said Yang.

'No, Thank You': The Mysterious Transformation Of 50-Year-Olds

Harry Dent, a financial newsletter writer, has been looking at the Census data, and he's uncovered something odd about American adults. When we turn 50, we dramatically change our clothes-buying habits. It's not gradual; gradual is what we'd expect. Instead, the change is drastic.

You can see it with men's shirts. In our early 50s, American men are at the top of our shirt buying game (either buying more shirts than at any other time in our lives, or maybe we're buying more expensively). Then watch what happens:

You see the same pattern in men's coats, jackets and furs (though the turn seems a year or two earlier):

Same thing for men's pants:

But how do you explain this next one? Men's underwear is deeply invisible (except in a locker room at a gym, where the ones who get to see it are other guys, and other guys, I'm betting, are paying no attention) so you have to wonder: Why do purchases rise when a man is between 20 and 50? Are wives/girlfriends/partners buying for us and trying keep us looking crisp? Or at least untattered? If so, why do they suddenly give up after 50? I don't trust this curve.

And this next one is a complete mystery. (But not when I checked with many of my friends, so maybe I just don't live like my peers). We spend our adult lives buying shoes and sneakers, wearing them out and replacing them at a constant rate. Unlike shirts, pants, suits, even underwear, there is no rising curve. Footwear is a constant. Until, once again, our mid-50s, we rather suddenly ? stop. Does this mean there's more shoe repair going on? Do we learn to tolerate holes in our soles? Is there less walking? That much less?

Harry Dent's collection of "Demand Curves" are all online here so you can browse through them on your own. Women, you will find, have the same pattern men do, but the turn, (also in their 50s) is softer. As they approach 60 the slide begins ? footwear goes, undergarments go, but a little more gently.

In searching for explanations, it occurs to me that the male and female silhouette may change, and change mightily in one's 30s and 40s, we have to buy new sets of clothes to cover up what's happened. After 55, we may settle in, body type-wise, and what's in the closet will keep working for us all the way home. I'd be curious if you folks reading this have explanations to offer. Or doubts, if you have them, about the underlying data.

Harry, by the way, isn't only interested in clothes; He has graphs for toys, tools, services, furniture, subscriptions, and some of them have their own mysterious subplots. Take a look at his chart for patio furniture. It's totally predictable all the way till the end, when the consumer approaches his or her 90th birthday. Suddenly, there's a spurt. What might these folks be purchasing? Something you use outside ...

But what?

Harry Dent, I should mention, has written several books about a coming financial collapse (The Great Crash Ahead, The Great Depression Ahead) as baby-boomers reduce their spending, so he's got a thesis ? that as the Baby Boomers retire, there will be less spending across the board until the 2020s ? and these Census-based charts may be selected to push his views about our future. But whatever his biases, these data are, presumably, gathered by Census workers with no particular future in mind ? which is why I find them so fascinating. If somebody out there knows something bogus about how the government creates these demand curves, please write in and let us know. Meantime, I'm just going to slip into my new sneakers (purchased merely three months ago, after an earlier sneaker purchase the year before) and let my neighbors wonder at my gleaming magnificence.

How To Use Online Marketing Principles To Launch Your Business ...

Here you will find effective and up-to-date information to guide you in applying Internet marketing to your business model. Your marketing efforts can be enhanced using these tips.

A good way to get your site users? opinions is to utilize polls located next to your content. This fills your website with engaging content that makes readers feel welcome.

When you are making a website you need to take care with your content. Educate your customers about your product and why it would be a benefit for them to purchase. To keep your audience?s attention, make sure you do not repeat any statements and keep out useless and filler content.

Offer people a guarantee when you market your products on the Internet. Customers want to know that your product is a sure bet before they part with their hard-earned cash. You can experiment by offering different guarantees on different products, and see what works for you. Try making a 90 day money-back guarantee on one product and a lifetime guarantee on another. Select which guarantee is best for the product that is being sold.

Give customers the option of rating and reviewing your products, along with explaining their choices. When your customers leave honest feedback, it inspires confidence in others who are considering purchasing from you. It is good advertising for the quality of both your products and your customer service.

Make sure to update your site?s content frequently. If your site has only old articles on it, it will not rank well in search results and people will not visit it again. If you site is orderly, functioning properly and is regularly maintained you will find that you have more visitors that stick around.

The word ?guaranteed? has a special allure for consumers when used in website marketing. A guarantee will let people know that they can trust in your company and your products. Customers value their hard-earned cash highly, and when they see a guarantee, they believe their chances of wasting their money are lower.

Just in case you do not know this already, you already possess the things you need to be a winner at online marketing. All that is required to be successful is you, not pricey software or get rich quick schemes. Just work hard and imagine what you can achieve when you are marketing yourself.

Offer special deals to new clients, such a deals for a dollar or buy one- get one free. This could be a good way to launch your online business or to generate a buzz as you release a new product. People may also be more likely to add other products to their cart at the same time. Above all, you need to be very confident in what you?re selling to people.

Incorporate an automatic electronic signature into your emails as it portrays a more professional image. This is just like handing out business cards. You want as many people to see your signature as possible. Letting those who receive your correspondence get a glimpse of your business is a great way to recruit new visitors to your website and generate even greater profits.

Always try to give an extra bonus to your customer when you ship their purchase. It might be a free sample or a discount coupon for future purchase. Most people look at coupons in a positive sense and it gives them a reason to purchase more of your products.

Try offering to put a portion of every purchase toward a relevant charity if that is something that will appeal to your audience. This needs to be clearly advertised to your visitors. A small part of your profit will go to the charity and your number of sales will probably increase.

The key to a successful Internet promotion strategy is to write unique quality content. This is particularly true for retailers on different sites, selling identical items, who all need an accurate manufacturer?s description. With your own original descriptions, peppered with choice keywords and manufacturer info, your site can really rise above the rest, even if you are all selling the same products.

Start small when launching a new website to introduce your offerings. There is a higher chance for search engines to bypass your site if it has over a million pages, than if your site only has twenty thousand pages.

Think about using simple terminology on your Internet site. These words will put your customers at ease, as most people do not enjoy products that are difficult to use or put together. You can quickly increase business in this manner.

Offer something unique on your site that none of your competitors have. Having animated images or even cartoons on your website might get people interested in stopping by. Giving your customers something they can only get through you is a great marketing tool.

This article should have given you some sound advice on Web marketing. We hope that you not only were able to learn something, but also will be able to apply it. Effective Website marketing can help your online business succeed.

The Geminids' peak was supposed to be good this year, as it occurred in a sky left dark by the new moon. Experts had predicted that viewers in rural areas might see 100 meteors per hour early Friday morning (Dec. 14) ? and perhaps even more.

Judging by the reactions of some SPACE.com readers, the Geminids did not disappoint.

"What an incredible show we had here!" Sean Parker, who watched the shower early Friday just west of Tucson, Ariz., told SPACE.com via email. "I was able to see about 50 per hour." [Photos: Geminid Meteors of 2012]

Parker constructed a gorgeous composite image of about 30 frames, which captured dozens of shooting stars streaking through the skies above a saguaro-studded desert mountain.

"This image took a lot of work, as I had to scroll through about 400 frames and find which frames had shooting stars in them, then cut out every meteor and blend," Parker said.

Skywatchers on the other side of the world were enthralled by the Geminids as well.

"Awesome experience," said Mumbai, India-based Swaroop Hangal, who also captured a photo of a fast-moving meteor.

"Today, I had planned to see 50 streaks and then quit with or without a pic," Hangal said. "Had almost lost hope when I could capture the 50th one, just between Betelgeuse at the bottom & Alhena in the Gemini constellation."

The Geminids? so named because they appear to emanate from the constellation Gemini (The Twins) ? are one of the most dependably impressive annual meteor showers.

They result when Earth plows through debris shed by a 3-mile-wide (5 kilometers) asteroid called 3200 Phaethon. These tiny particles burn up in our planet's atmosphere, leaving bright streaks in the sky to commemorate their passing.

The Geminids' source is unusual for?meteor showers, which are typically caused by streams of sloughed-off comet particles. Debris streams from the famous Halley's Comet, for example, produce the Orionids every October and the Eta Aquarids, which peak in early May.

If you missed the Geminid peak last night, don't fret; you still have a few days to catch the shower this year. The Geminids should linger until Sunday (Dec. 16) or so before fizzling out completely.

Editor's Note: If you take a photo of this year's Geminids that you'd like to share with SPACE.com for a possible story or gallery, please send it, along with your comments, to spacephotos@space.com.

Huawei launches 61inch Ascend Mate

Huawei launches an absolutely massive set today during its press event: the 6.1-inch Huawei Ascend Mate. The handset boasts a 720p display and a 1.5 GHz quad-core CPU but fortunately, that gigantic display (which is low temperature polysilicon) has been paired with a 4,050mAh battery -- the Galaxy Note II runs with a 3,100mAh cell -- and we're hoping this means the pocket-straining slab will go the distance in daily use. WiFi will apparently see a speed boost to 150Mbps thanks to dual WiFi receivers and in the stage demo a 1GB file took a mere 60 seconds to download. Huawei claims the Ascend Mate will see you chatting for 22 hours, surfing the Web for 14, or watching 10 hours of video. Fully 73% of that handset's face is display which features Huawei's new "Magic Touch" tech, the new moniker means you can use the phone with normal gloved hands. A few app highlights include a camera and navigation combination dubbed "Guiding Wizard," an easy way to isolate text in words for lookup called "Smart Reading" and finally "Easy Panel" for quick access to Notes, Messages and the like. The Ascend Mate ships for an unknown price to China in February 2013 and other countries -- sadly no mention which -- in March.

Israeli premier: frontier fence with Syria needed

JERUSALEM (AP) ? Israel's premier pledged Sunday to build a fortified fence along the frontier with Syria, warning that radical Islamist forces have taken over the area.

Israel has largely stayed out of the civil war that has engulfed Syria and killed more than 60,000 people, but it is concerned that violence could spill over into Israel.

Israel worries that Syrian President Bashar Assad might try to draw Israel into the fighting as a distraction if his situation becomes desperate. An even greater concern is a scenario in which Assad is toppled, Islamic extremists take his place and gain control of Syria's stockpile of chemical weapons.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke as Assad delivered a rare nationwide address in Syria, calling for a national reconciliation conference. Assad claimed that "terrorists who carry the ideology of al-Qaida" were active in his country and demanding that foreign countries stop arming the rebels.

Speaking at a weekly Cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said the Syrian regime was "unstable," and Israel was concerned about the country's chemical weapons capabilities. Therefore, he said Israel needed a barrier on its frontier with Syria, similar to a structure it has nearly completed along its border with Egypt. That fence has largely stopped the flow of African migrants.

"We intend to erect an identical fence, with a few changes based on the actual territory, along the Golan Heights. We know that on other side of our border with Syria today, the Syrian army has moved away, and in its place, global jihad forces have moved in," he said. "Global jihad" is the term Israel uses for forces influenced by al-Qaida. Syria's rebels include some al-Qaida-allied groups.

"We are coordinating our intelligence and readiness with the United States and others so that we might be prepared for any scenario and possibility that could arise," Netanyahu said. His office did not say long it would take to complete the project.

Israel captured the Golan Heights in the 1967 Mideast war and later annexed the strategic plateau, a move not recognized by the international community. Despite constant hostility between the two countries, Syria has kept the border mostly quiet since the 1973 Mideast war.

Israel has grown jittery since pro-Palestinian activists breached the frontier during two demonstrations in 2011. Following that unrest, Israel began laying mines along the frontier and reinforcing the fence that already exists.

Defense officials say they have already fortified 10 kilometers (6 miles) out of the planned 70-kilometer (45-mile) route it plans.

Since the uprising against Assad began in March 2011, several mortar rounds and other light munitions have landed on the Israeli side of the frontier. Israel suspects these were cases of stray fire and were not intended to spark a new front, but Israel fired warning shots back to deter further incidents.

Israel has almost completed a barrier along 200 kilometers (125 miles) of its border with Egypt to block African migrants and militants from crossing in from the lawless Sinai peninsula.

Israel previously constructed a barrier along and in the West Bank aimed at keeping Palestinian suicide bombers out of its cities.

Used-clothing outlet expands to Ohio, keep Internet presence ...

Avalon Exchange co-owner Stuart McLean at his former Mt. Lebanon location. The high-fashion secondhand store closed in Mt. Lebanon and is moving its inventory and fixtures to a new store in the Cleveland suburb of Lakewood, while McLean and his wife are also pushing an online version of their business called ?Glossimer.? The Avalon Exchange location in Squirrel Hill will remain open. Jasmine Goldband | Tribune-Review

Popularity and demand for fashion-focused, second-hand clothing is expanding, according to Stuart McLean, who wants to grow his business to take advantage of the trend.

To do that, McLean this week closed his upscale used-clothing outlet Avalon Exchange in Mt. Lebanon and is moving fixtures and inventory to a new store in the Cleveland suburbs.

McLean, who co-owns the Squirrel Hill-based chain of second-hand shops with his wife, Tammy Thurston McLean, said the 3,000-square-foot store at 680 Washington Road is moving to Lakewood, Ohio, a suburb of about 52,000 people on Cleveland?s western border.

The store in Mt. Lebanon had been profitable, but sales and growth had leveled off. So McLean said he will now focus on expanding in the Cleveland area, on a designer fashion resale website the couple has started and the possibility of expanding to other cities.

?The (Mt. Lebanon) area didn?t grow as much as we hoped. It got to a certain level and stayed there,? McLean said. ?Maybe at a different point in my career I would have kept it open.?

He said he has no plans to close the Squirrel Hill Avalon Exchange on Forbes Avenue, which McLean said did twice as much business as Mt. Lebanon in a smaller space.

?We?re going to be here forever,? he said.

In addition to the Squirrel Hill location, Avalon has branches in St. Louis? Delmar Loop neighborhood and the Coventry Village area of Cleveland Heights, a suburb on the eastern side of Cleveland. Stuart McLean is a partner in Reddz Trading, a second-hand shop in Washington?s posh Bethesda suburb.

Last summer, he and his wife joined Lindsay Williams Kress, a former buyer for ModCloth.com ? an originator in the online sale of fashionable second-hand clothing ? to start an online-only store for second-hand designer clothes and accessories at Glossimer.com.

Users of that website send photos and descriptions of designer-label goods they?d like to sell to Tammy McLean and Kress. The company then picks up the cost of shipping to Pittsburgh, inspects the goods and sends back 50 percent or more of the resale value. McClean and Kress then photograph the goods in a studio they set up in Squirrel Hill, and resell the goods online. Business was slow at first, but transactions have picked up in the past two months, Tammy McLean said.

?Luxury goods had a surge this year, and ... there isn?t anyone out there who?s already nailed that market for selling online,? Kress said. ?When you?re selling this stuff on eBay, you have really high fees for luxury goods and you have to be your own customer service department.?

Unlike ModCloth, where Kress was the seventh full-time employee, Glossimer.com is focused purely on designer items and resale, she said.

San Francisco-based ModCloth, which was founded by a pair of Carnegie Mellon University graduates and has a large presense in Pittsburgh, began by reselling vintage items before branching out into new, vintage-inspired goods.

Stuart McLean plans to travel to Houston this year, where he hopes to scout new locations for Avalon Exchange or Reddz Trading. He mentioned the possibility of expanding Reddz to another location in Washington.

With seasonal help being let go and student employees returning to school, only two regular employees at the Mt. Lebanon Avalon were laid off as a result of the store?s closure. A manager there is being transferred to Squirrel Hill, Tammy McLean said.

?The store was apparently performing, but (McLean) is putting his resources and time elsewhere,? said Eric Milliron, Mt. Lebanon?s economic development officer. The bright side, he said, was that Avalon?s closing would open up a large contiguous storefront ? the kind of space that?s hard to find in Mt. Lebanon?s built-out Uptown business district.

Nepali charged with torture appears in UK court

LONDON (AP) ? A British court on Saturday denied bail to a colonel in the Nepalese army facing charges of torture allegedly committed during the Himalayan nation's civil war.

Kumar Lama, 46, was arrested Thursday at a residential address in the English town of St. Leonards-on-Sea, about 70 miles (115 kilometers) southeast of London. He was later charged with intentionally "inflicting severe pain or suffering" on two individuals as a public official ? or person acting in official capacity.

Britain's Metropolitan Police said the charges relate to one incident that allegedly occurred between April 15 and May 1, 2005, and another that allegedly occurred between April 15 and Oct. 31, 2005 at the Gorusinghe Army Barracks in Nepal. Scotland Yard has said that the arrest did not take place at the request of Nepalese authorities.

British authorities claim "universal jurisdiction" over serious offenses such as war crimes, torture, and hostage-taking, meaning such crimes can be prosecuted in Britain regardless of where they occurred.

Lama spoke only to confirm his identity when he appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Saturday. Two diplomats from the Nepalese embassy were in court for the short hearing, according to Britain's Press Association news agency.

The court heard that Lama has served in the Nepalese Army since 1984 and was in charge of the barracks at the time of the alleged offenses. The colonel is currently serving as a U.N. peacekeeper in South Sudan, having previously served in Sierra Leone and Lebanon, and he was due to return to Africa on Saturday after spending Christmas in England.

The case has touched off a diplomatic spat, with the Nepalese government summoning the U.K. ambassador in Kathmandu to protest. Britain's Foreign Office confirmed on Friday that Nepal's government summoned the U.K. ambassador in Kathmandu because it was upset over the arrest, but declined to comment further.

Thousands of people died and thousands were injured or tortured during Nepal's civil war, a decade-long conflict that ended in 2006.

Judge Quentin Purdy remanded Lama in custody pending a Jan. 24 court date.

Yet Another List of Internet Marketing New Year's Resolutions for 2013

Yawn ? another tired New Year?s resolution article, right?
Don?t click away just yet ? I hate the usual generic blog posts almost as much as I dislike quickly broken resolutions. ?I am going to try to make these easy and useful?

Happy & Successful New YearSEO, social media and marketing on the internet in general has become much more ?serious? in the past year. Google has increased its efforts to remove junk from search results, and social media is maturing beyond being the CB radio of our generation.
Here are a few things to do, or stop doing, that will help your business move ahead in 2013.

Get Healthy

You know you need to exercise, eat right, visit your doctor occasionally. Your website could use a little of that, too.
Give your website a thorough check up. Look for outdated technology, broken links, slow loading pages, and other mistakes you didn?t know you have been making ever since you and your web guy parted ways. If you really want to be thorough, consider getting a comprehensive SEO audit and website review?to really shape up your online marketing.
Your website is the hub of your online presence. Take care of it so it can take care of you. Tweet this

Get to Know What You Don?t Know

Website owners who are not primarily ?internet people? can be their own worst enemy. Maybe you look at Facebook and think ?look at all these people I can tell about my business? rather than looking at it as an opportunity to gain respect, trust and loyalty. Or maybe you try every low cost offer to get you that number one spot in Google searches, not realizing that those thousands of backlinks or fake Twitter followers are going to cause problems for you. Despite having been warned about such things, some people just can?t stop getting in their own way. ?There are plenty of things that anyone can do in online marketing, but there are also many things that look easier than they really are. Just like other aspects of your business, some things are best left to experienced professionals ? just like accounting, legal issues, or other things you can do yourself but it doesn?t always mean that you should.

Get Involved in Your Web Presence

Yeah, I hear you: ?I am not into all that social media stuff.? On a personal level, neither am I. So I get that. But guess what: most people ARE into social media so you or someone who works for you does need to be involved. Try to stop thinking of social media and the internet as something totally new and different when it comes to business. Think of it all as just what it is ? the way people communicate today. I wonder if anyone ever said ?I am just not into that new telephone thing??
Social media and even your own website or blog can be a great opportunity for people to get to know and love what you do, as well as making you more accessible to people. They don?t have to write down a number and remember to call. They can just click a button when the impulse strikes and that first contact is made.?
Beyond simple communication, social media can also serve your public relation needs. Local businesses often put a lot of resources into having a strong presence at the local Community Day or big local and regional events. You are there shaking hands, sponsoring fun activities, handing out freebies and slipping some marketing materials into the mix. ?Potential customers get to know you and like you at these events. ?Every day is Community Day on the internet. Tweet this

Learn New Things

Even if you have decided you should get the heck out of your own way and hire someone to manage your web presence, it is still a good idea to keep learning about your website, social media and how it is being used in your business. Spend just a little time learning how things work, and what new opportunities are out there. That way you won?t feel ?in the dark? when your SEO guy rambles on about something that makes your eyes glaze over. And you may turn out to be the smartest person in the room when you tell your marketing team about a brand new social site that caters to your industry.

Don?t Believe Everything You Read

You are ready to expand your horizons and learn new things and that is awesome. But here?s the thing about that ? despite the slow, steady clean up of spam and shady tactics in SEO and online marketing, there is still a vast amount of bullshit out there. That kind of makes that other resolution about learning new things more challenging. When you find that great article that seems to have all the answers, take a moment to see if it really makes sense. Consider the source ? how is the reputation? What else do they write about and does any of that seem dead wrong? ?Social signals? are not always conclusive, but do any well known trustworthy people or sites associate with the source of the new information? (By the way, that is something you should be aiming for in social media ? making friends with people who are trusted).
Whether you spend a lot of time verifying or none at all, the key takeaway here is ?look before you leap? into a bad idea.

?Hope these resolutions help you and your business have a very happy and successful new year.?
